Hi,
I have a 94' ATX in relatively good shape. It's been very reliable and all of a sudden the check engine light went on. I checked all the fluids and they are good, but I noticed a slight hesitation while accelerating. It's was as if the accelerator was losing power, but it never cut out. Any ideas?
Thanks a million.

Usually a check engine light will not indicate any fluid problems. You need
to pull the codes. Go to www.shotimes.com to see how. It seems like the web
site is down, however.

SHOs from '92 on are considered Generation 2, and have more complex engine
management than Gen 1s like mine, but I know that in general the CE light is mainly
to monitor pollution control devices and fuel and electrical management. Fluids and
other non-essential functions are not monitored.
You would need to read the codes that the Powertrain Control Module, or computer,
has stored, and then go from there. It is possible to read them yourself, after you
find the plug under the hood and then connect a couple of connectors in it to each
other, then turn the key on.
For the best information, go to the SHOTimes website...
shotimes.com/php-bin/ and check out the instructions there for
checking codes. In the middle of the home page is a click line called "Care and
Feeding of the SHO". Click on that, then go to Engine Management, and click on "3
digit codes". Here you can see how to do the jumper reading yourself, or at least
see what the codes mean. You can also take the car to various places that will read
the codes for free or for a relatively small fee.
The engine CAN immediately quit altogether from a failure that will turn on the
light, or it can run for a long time with the light on. It totally depends on what
is causing it to come on, which you need to find by reading the codes.
Good Luck..
George

When I was composing my response, it gave me a failure message on my browser when I
first tried it from my bookmark. I Googled it, and clicked on that URL, and it
worked OK. I went back to my bookmarked URL and it worked after the Google check.
Something wierd was happening, but it works now (at least for me).

Hi Sarina-
That Check Engine light generated a numerical trouble
code that corresponds to a certain issue or problem
with your car. There used to be good info on how to
check the codes at home but I can't pull up the site
right now (www.shotimes.com)
Where are you located? If there an AutoZone near you
they will check your diagnostic troulbe codes for
free. www.autozone.com
good luck!

Sarina,
The Check Engine light means that the computer (which runs your engine and
transmission based on information and feedback from a bunch of sensors)
senses that something is not right. Maybe there is actually something wrong
(leading to diminished performance or excessive emissions), or maybe one of
the sensors has aged and is no longer sending the right information.
The only way to deal with it is to find out what conditions the computer has
recorded. This comes in the form of a 3-digit number (or numbers, if
there's more than one issue), which you then look up on various internet
resources and (I hope) also report back to this list. We can help you best
once you've told us those 3-digit code(s).
Call around to local auto parts stores; many offer, as a free service
(hoping it will lead to parts purchases), to help you get your computer to
cough up its codes.
Please get back to us with those numbers and we can help you sort out and
repair whatever's wrong.

Definitely get the numbers, not what they think it is. It should be a 3

Sarina--really hard to start guessing without the codes. Usually some places
like AutoZone will run the codes for free (in most states anyway), so I'd
start there, then with those codes, more help can be suggested.

They are relatively the same (gen1 vs gen2 engine
management wrt to complexity). The PCM's are swappable
to the earlier cars too.

How many miles and has any maintenance been done? Plugs, wires? Oil in the
spark plug wells? This would be my first guess but lets get more information
so we don't need to guess!
