Fuel Mileage gauge

Hi all,
I have an 87 Mustang LX v-8, and am interested in getting some
kind of electronic device that meters fuel usage. The type of thing I
want is something similar to what my friend has in his corvette. It's a
digital display that shows near-instantaneous fuel mileage, average mileage
for the current tank of gas, gallons of gas remaining, etc. I figure
someone must sell something like this to add to fuel-injected Mustangs,
but I have never seen anything advertised in the usual places. Any
pointers/advice/experiences would be appreciated...

I doubt there is anything like this available for the Mustang. The
function has to be pretty much built into the car from the factory because a
unit to do this would need access to the Vehical Speed Sensor signals and
know the pulse width of the injectors and injector size to calculate this.
While it could be done, it would be a bit more complex than what the 'usual'
manufacturers of devices like this do. Most add on milage gauges in the past
were for carburators and just measured fuel flow to the carburator along with
a speed sensor of some sort. This can't be done on an EFI Mustang because
most of the fuel pumped to the engine is just recirculated back to the tank.

As an aside, I actually plan on making a mpg indicator for my car by taking
the outputs from a Crane Interceptor II and converting the RPM and injector
widths to mpg. This will have to pretty much assume 5th gear (there's no
access to the vehicals speed sensor or gear selection from the CI II), and is
just a simple add on to what the real project is, which is doing some data
logging of the engine operating parameters with a laptop computer.

I don't know if all EEC-IVs have this feature but mine
(for a Merkur XR4Ti) has a pin that gives a signal that
can be used by a tripcomputer. It is not being used on
my car but the Scorpio has one of those gadgets.
If the Mustang EEC-IV has a trip-output pin you could
potentially get the computer out of a trashed Scorpio
and hook it up. Hmm, interesting project :-)

Good idea, Sander, but I'd suggest looking for a domestic part
first. I haven't priced the trip computer for the Scorpio,
but judging from the prices of some of the other black boxes
I have replaced, I's venture to guess it's a $600-800 item new
$200-300 used.

BTW, if anybody does want to pursue this,
the Scorpio computer uses three independent inputs:
- Fuel consumption: from EEC
- Fuel remaining: from second channel of tank sender
- Distance: from gearbox speedo transmitter (the Scorpio has
an electric speedometer)
