Regarding Synthetic oil experiences:

My 5.0 5 speed has been drinking the mobil 1 stuff ever since I can
remember. At 130,000 miles, it does not burn any oil, and has plenty of
power to boot. I change it every 3,000..Engine swap will be soon, just for
preventative reasons..

Please give me your old engine when it's available. It sounds like it's
just about broken in.

Ditto for me. I've for 179,000 miles on the original engine (OK, I *did*
replace the valve cover gasketss at 60k, but that's it.) It's had Mobil 1
15w50 ever since 30,000 miles. It uses about 1 qt every 1800 miles or so.

Are you really sure you want to replace it for "preventative" reasons?
You know what they say - "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" Then again, I
AM building up a new engine for racing...

Is this subject line to avoid Chucko's anti-oil-jihad mail filter smiling smiley

I'm planning on using synthetic in my new engine also. However, I don't
think you need to use it to get your money's worth out of your Ford.

Previously I used various premium and regular brands of dino-oil,
changed usually at 3,000 miles, once or twice at intervals up to 7,000.

The engine was never opened and I was able to get the factory rated
0-60 times even at 210,000 miles just before I pulled the engine.
(I had the advantage of an upgraded exhaust, but this is a '79 2bbl so
the numbers are still too embarassing to mention)

I figure this engine has used over 350 quarts of oil since new,
so using synthetic oil would have been an extra $800 or so. That's
not a lot for extra insurance, but it's something to consider if
you'll be ditching the car or engine long before it's likely to die on
plain old Penzoil.

If anyone wants to do a real wear comparison, I've got a camshaft
and valve train laying around here somewhere.
