This engine has gotten my interest lately as a possible swap candidate. Any
info on it would be greatly appreciated, but especially info regarding
weight, dimensions, mounting similarities or differences from a 5.0 and
adapability to a T5. . .anything else that would be useful. I know they are
now found in Lincoln Mark VIII's, anywhere else? Any info greatly
appreciated. Mail to me directly and I'll post a summary for the list.
Thanks,
- --Torey

Torey - I've had my eye on this motor for about a year now. The 302 is
reported to weigh about 450 lbs, and the 4.6 DOHC is supposed to come in at
464 lbs or so. Due to the DOHC configuration, it's a wide beastie, reputed to
be as difficult a fit as a 460. Since this motor is some completely new, I'll
bet the motor mount points and bellhousing interface will be very different
from the Windsor motors. Since the Mark VIIIs are all autos, you'll have to
probably have to wait for the '96 Mustang Cobra to come out (maybe 9/95, maybe
1/96) with the DOHC 4.6. Some 'stang rags have reported Ford will put a Borg
Warner T-45 5-speed behind them. Another alternative for a bellhousing before
the '96 Cobra may be some of the outfits prepping to race with the 4.6 - maybe
Rousch, etc. There isn't much at all out there yet for this. All I've seen
so far is an ad for a blower kit.
The SOHC motor is available in other cars now (T-Bird for one) - I don't know
about bellhousings there.
The Mark VIII 4.6 DOHC is rated at 280 hp (is that at 6500 rpm?). I called
Mercury, and after a fairly painful process, someone gave me the following
info for this motor: 3.6" bore, 3.6" stroke, 5.93" rod length, primary valve
intake lift: .219", secondary valve intake lift: .217", exhaust valve lift:
.219" (no duration info). Nice 1.65 rod/stroke ratio.
The rags report the 4.6 DOHC for the '96 Cobra will be rated around 300 hp,
with a different set of cams and different intake manifold than the '95 Mark
VIII motor.
I've talked with a local recycler about Mark VIII motor availability - he's
finding them nearly impossible to get ahold of - it's hard to total a car
that's worth over $30,000 and still get a usable engine out of it. He said
there are a lot of hot engines showing up - watch out. Another interesting
point - this guy was under the impression that the EEC-V module in the Mark
VIII needed a lot of inputs from the auto tranny, and he didn't know how
feasible a simple conversion to an earlier T-5 or Tremec would be. ???
My personal plan is to get a 4.6 DOHC from a wrecked '96 Cobra and put a
Tremec behind it in my '69 Mustang convertible. I still have to figure out
what the new smog laws (IM 240) in Massachusetts will require - worst case is
compliance '96 with standards. I don't know what my exhaust story will be -
we'll see.
What's your swap plan?

Peter,
I remember seeing an article on a SOHC 4.6 in '69 Mustang. I didn't
pay too much attention to it, but I thought it implied the 4.6 was
actually wider than a 460 and the car had to have it's shock towers
removed or at least notched. Is this the case? Also, the current
(April '95) issue of Super Ford listed three places with swap kits
for 4.6 mod motors in '69 Mustangs:
Lyle Harris at CJI (312) 264-5658
Kensington Motors (810) 437-2014
AEW (909) 930-9852
Cheers,
Dan Jones
