Does anyone know if there is a cheap and easy way to convert my '74 Bronco
302, 2v to breakerless electronic ignition ? I'm "mechanically challenged"
so easy is the operative word here. I'm afraid that this wil turn into a
pointless :-) exercise destined only to lead to frustration.

Thanks,

Mallory makes a breakerless ignition called a Unilite. You have to take
your points/condenser out of the distributor, and the Unilite mounts in
their place. This device uses a beam of light instead of points to make
the contact. The nice thing is, you install it, set the timing, and forget
about it. Since it's all under the distributor cap it looks 100% stock
as well. I had one installed in my '70 GS455 (oops, that's not a Ford!!!).
I think they run about $100 or so. It's supposed to install in less than
an hour. They carry them at Supershops, and I'm sure Summit probably has
them.

My favorite is to use a DuraSpark distributor and an MSD-6 box with the
newer stock Ford "E-coil" (found on just about any '86 or newer vehicle).
I thought Ford was already using DuraSpark in '74, and I am surprised
your Bronco would not have it. The DuraSpark electronic control boxes
are not known for their reliability, which is why I like to swap them
out for the MSD. Make sure you re-time the engine when you are finished,
since it appears that the MSD uses the rising edge of the pickup pulse
for trigger (which is "electronically correct"winking smiley, while the DS uses
the falling edge. You can pick up the DS distributor from just about
any mid-70 to mid-80 302, just make sure it is really not "junk" (i.e.
the shaft does not wobble around). Pick up a new E-coil for about $30
at your local parts store (say, for an '87 Mustang), and the MSD-6A
will cost about $130 or so.

If you decide to do it, I can help with the wiring.

I bought a Mallory Unilight for my '67 302 Mustang. It was a piece of
cake to put in. I also bought a Promaster coil. The Unilight replaces
the guts of your distributor and can be done on the car (easier to pull
it). I had to mount the coil on the shock tower but otherwise it was
pretty much a bolt on. Cost was something like $90 for the ignition and
maybe $45 for a coil. Try PAW in California for proce and delivery. I
also paid about $30 for a good set of plug wires and increased my plug
gap to 0.040". Cleanest burning set of plugs I ever had.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my question about breakerless ignition
for my Bronco. I have ordered the the Mallory Unilite conversion. It should
be in today. I'll try to get it installed this weekend.
As an aside, I found the unit in an old Jeg's catalog and called them for a
current price (which was $3.00 less than the '93 catalog price). I took the
catalog down to my local speed shop and showed them what I wanted. They
matched the price and delivery of the catalog. Mail order is great, but I
think it pays to give the local guys a chance to compete as there are other
advantages to buying stuff close to home. Just my opinion, ymmv.
