I'm thinking about buying a 72 coupe with about 96,000
miles on original engine, very good condition however,
garaged. I don't know anything about engines, and I'm
worried that an engine with this many miles may need a
rebuild soon. True? Does anyone have any opinions on
how many miles is average before rebuild? Cost?
Anything else I should be aware of? Thanks.

hey,
Just a thought, 96,000 miles isn't that many. My Ford aerostar has 158k+ on
it, with only 8k on the rebuilt engine. The only reason we replaced it was
cause the rings were bad. Didn't want to go to all the trouble. On
mini-vans it's a PAIN to work on engines smiling smiley

Probably will need one soon. The oil back then was not nearly as good as
the oil now. 100,000 miles is a lot of miles.

All these stories of engines with 100000+ miles are the exception, not the
rule. It can be much costlier to not overhaul an engine, than to go ahead
and do it. I put 167000 on my 351C and put off rebuilding because it ran
well and didn't use any oil. Then it dropped a valve, broke a piston, and
stuck a rod out the side of the block. Not sure which order. :<winking smiley Overhaul
would have been cheaper than finding a 351C block.
