what type of oil to run in a 302 ?

Hi you all,

I'm not baiting with a cheap shot, but really would like to discuss, which
oil is the best suited for a high revving 302. My engine has about 3000
miles now and no noticeable oil consumption. It's the first time I ever
experienced this with an american V8 ! I use Mobil Super S 15W 40 mineral
oil. The engine was fully blueprinted and built like an oval track engine
by PYLE Bros. in Houston, Texas. It was build with a 7500 rpm redline in
mind. I'm a bit afraid about using Mobil 1 5W 50 synthetic oil since the
289 I had before burned 1 quart of it every 200 miles. It seemed like it
was too thin for this engine.

I run 15W50 Mobil One Synthetic. It never burned oil between changes (I
have some blowby now, so it does not count!) smiling smiley

I've always sworn by Castrol GTX. In a high revving 302 (what does that
mean?) I'd suggest 20W50... In a "lower revving 302", probably 10W30
would be sufficient... There is a claim that you can get better mileage
(or more HP) by using the lighter weight oils with little loss of
protection, but I havent seen it in experiments with my "high revving
302" (I dont race the car, so I dont have ET as data), so I'm switching
back to the heavier oil next change.

I've stayed away from the Synthetics because of cost. (And my distrust
of the safety of just changing filters every 3K miles and topping off
the oil. It sounds neat, but...)

I use synthetics in my newer cars (Ford Taurus SHO and Explorer with 5.0),
but not in my '66 Mustang (since I haven't rebuilt the straight six and the
rings and/or valves seem a little loose anyway I would expect to have
higher oil consumption with synthetic).

I change the oil every 3K and pay the extra money expecting that I will get
less wear and make the engines last longer. I wouldn't just blindly change
the filter and top off the oil, but there are a few people on the SHO
mailing list who send off oil samples for analysis of the oil additives as
well as checking for metal particles of various types: they're supposed to
be able to detect bearing wear versus piston ring wear, for example. That
also sounds neat, but...

p.s. the flathead is so old it doesn't have any steenkin' oil filter so it
gets changed every 1000 miles or six months. That probably would be worth
running some oil analyses on.

I've run Mobil 1 in my everyday cars for about 8 years. My
previous car, an '92 Sentra SE-R was a 2.0 liter, 4-cylinder with
a 7500 RPM redline in stock form. Obviously a different animal
than a 302 but both high-revving. I ran 10W30 Mobil 1 exclusively in it
and never had any oil consumption until I sold it last year.

I currently run Mobil 1 in the Miata but regular dyno oil in the
'66 Mustang as it's a stock, 2V, 289.

A company with a very good racing reputation is Red Line. They've
got a lot of informative technical info with testing to back up their
products at

www.redlineoil.com

I've used their gear oil (great stuff) and Water Wetterand have been very
pleased. If I had spent the money you did to build up the 302, I'd definitely
spend the money to use their products in the engine.
