So, as I'm working on getting the '68 back on the road (stop, steer, go,
show), I'm also trying to think ahead about what I want to do when I
finally get to the show part. Since it's a daily driver, I want comfortable
and safe seats and I'll be changing the current '68 3 point belts to a
modern retracting 3 point.

While the old classic seats are somewhat comfortable, they can't touch
modern safety stds - no headrest, etc. BUT, I want to keep it looking as
true to the original as possble, including the Ivy Gold interior. So, does
anybody know of a source of vinyl for recovering a set of modern seats? No
luck in the catalogs, and the two vinyl guys I've talked to can't come that
close with sheet material - around here, they order them pre-made for these
old cars, and just change them out.

Andre

A couple of us have the Scott Drake Flo-Fit seats which are modern reclining
seats with headrests, but are upholstered to look just like the original seats.
(including the "pony" strip for those of us with the 65/66 deluxe interior)

I think TMI sells vinyl too and not just upholstery, you might want to check
with them.

Also, smsautofabrics.com/ supposedly has matching vinyl & fabric for
nearly any car.

I got the "Pony Sport" kits for upgrading the stock seats to a more modern
style with original pony style vinyl. Headrests are optional. I'm quite
happy with mine.

what i did was .....went to the junk yard, found seats i liked, then ordered
a set of mustang upholstery. took the seats and upholstery to a guy who does
upholstery on the side (outside of his upholstery job).....and told
him.....make this upholstery fit these seats......he did an awesome job and
only charged me $80.....but ......he is a big procrastinator, he had the
seats over a year, but it wasnt a big deal to me. i had told him to take his
time as i was restoring the body at that time anyway.
oh , and i dont know where he got the extra vinyl he needed, but it
matched very close....

Why don't you simply do what a lot of folks with 68's do? Put 69 seats in it? They look almost the same but have the higher backs for head and neck support. I am currently looking for a decent set for my 68 to do just that. I know a lot of others who have already done it. From what they tell me, they use the same track and everything. So doesn't seem like too big a job to replace them, unlike when I decided to recover my 06's cloth seats with GT leather takeoffs. Yikes!! took 3-1/2 days to complete it, some hogring pliers, shattered nerves and a few bandaids for the sharp metal pieces I didn't realize were sharp until too late (but I did it!).

I've done three 66 seat sets and the worst I've done was misjudge where a hog ring was supposed to come out.
I put it right through my thumb and nail and the seat frame. I had to cut it off the seat frame first and then pull the two pieces out of my thumb.

I have the front seat kit sitting in my garage (3 years now....). I
need to contact TMI or Mustangs Plus about the rear seat kit to match.
I got these on clearance open box from Mustangs Plus for a fastback,
then sold the fastback rear seat kit.

Well get it done already! I'm sure you'll be happy with the results.
Initially I tried installing them myself but that's one of the rare DIY
projects I've given up on. I got a referral for a great upholstery guy
though and they look and feel great.

Lots of great ideas here. I'll add my $.02. I just bought some '87 GT seats and put them in. The tracks weren't hard to adapt, and I also modified the foam to fit me better. I've been happy with them, but since I built my car for the corners I'd like something more supportive. They are 100% better than the originals though, and I was rear ended pretty hard and the high back and head rest really helped.

I'm redoing the interior completely though to look more retro than classic. I'll send pics as soon as I'm done. That'll be about the year 2012 the way it's going now ;-)

Good idea - I didn't remember seeing the '69 seat, but a search for pics
shows they may be the ticket - and available in Ivy Gold. If I can't find
a decent set, there is always the possiblity of '69 skins adapted to newer
seats as Jason suggested.
