Hello out there. The old raised white letter "super GT' tires on my 65
Falcon are getting old, and I had a mild blowout a few months ago. I
couldn't afford to replace them all then so I put a practically brand new
'used' goodyear on as a replacement for $10. (to bad there weren't 3
more). I then decided it was time I bought a spare wheel which had a
retread tire already on it. I was planning to put the goodyear on it when
I bought a new set. Well about that time my dad decided he wanted new
tires on his oldsmobile and gave me a year old set of perellis in almost
perfect condition. My car was off the road for other reasons this whole
time. Well, yesterday my dads cars timing chain broke, which in that poor
early 90's engine design, busts the head all up inside. Last time it
happened the bill was around $2000 for it all to be fixed. So he is
getting a new car and has told me I can have those new Mechelin tires he
has on the olds (with less than a month of wear), which also sounds good to
me but now I have TOO MANY tires! (he also said I could Have the car, but
with design flaws like that, who wants it?-- Im a falcon sorta man)

HERES MY QUESTION: The tires originally on my 65 when I bought it were
p185/70r14's, which worked fine. Of the tires I can replaces them with,
the mechelin are 195/70r14's and the perellis are p195 75r14. And to make
it more confusing, my spare right now is a p195 75b14, and the goodyear I
had hoped to replace it with is a 185/70514.

Someone help me put this all in perspective please! What are the
differences between these tires? They are all 14 inch wheels? wont the
new tires work for me OK?

HERES MY SECOND QUESTION: while Im at it I think I might as well rebuild
the suspension or at least replace the front end bushings. It seems a
little sloppy and leaves a terrible ware pattern on the inside of the front
tires. Maybe do the rear springs too. I have a 65 Falcon and have heard
of certain front and rear end Mustang kits that 'fit most' 64-68 Falcons,
as well as stories from people who say that the kits they bought did NOT
work... Does anyone know which kits will fit the Falcon 6 cyl as well as
the Mustang. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Nathan

Nathan,

I have the 185's on my 65 Mustang. I've been wishing since putting the
tires on that I had something wider and a bit lower profile. The big tall
skinny pizza cutters that came with my car are also the 185/75/14's so
that's what I put on her. The reason that I would go to something wider and
lower profile is for better braking and cornering that such a tire would
give. The Michelin 195/70r14's are the both of these qualities in width
(first number) and height (second number). The Perelli's are slightly
higher profile (second number), which I believe will have more body roll.
My gut instinct would be to use the lower profile Michelin's. Oh ya, about
that spare. I would put something small as the spare. I find your
185/70/14 a good choice. It takes a bit less space and you will definitely
be using your trunk space more often than your spare tire.

I would try to get all your suspension work (especially the front end) done
before you replace the tires with new ones. You don't want to put that same
ugly tread pattern on a new set of tires. Also, the wider the tires that
you have on your car, the more you will notice some of the other suspension
"quirks" that you have. I ain't no expert, but that's my 2 bits, none the
less.

the tires are different sizes ;-). a quick pointer:

tire size: 205/65R14

means:

first number: width, in millimeters (205mm, in this case)

second number: aspect ratio, expressed as a percentage of width.
(this is the this is the *height* of the *sidewall* of
number after the tire (205mm * .65 = 133.25mm). this is the
the slash) distance from the tread of the tire to the bead.

third number: diameter of the rim, in inches
(the number
after the
letter)

so in the above example you have a tire 205mm wide, with a sidewall
133.25mm high, mounted on a 14-inch rim. if you wanna do the math, you
end up with a rolling (theoritical) diameter of ~24.5 in. (14 in. + ( 2 *
5.246 in.)).

what does this mean to you? ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!

just kidding--the thing is, you really shouldn't put tires that are too
wide for a rim on that rim. you'll get a 'bowing out' in the middle of
the tire, 'cause there's too much tire squeezing on too little rim. the
opposite is true also. too narrow a tire will 'cup in', trying to stretch
on too wide a rim. what's too wide and too narrow? for your example, I
dunno, hopefully the list will have better experience. it sorta depends
on how wide the rim is to begin with, and how tall the tire is as well.
(it's easier to fit an extra 20mm of tire on a 12-inch wide rim.) you can
stray from the manufacturers recommendations, sometimes quite a bit. I
think for the ones you listed, you could pull it off. I *would* use the
same size tire, though, on all four rims. or at least the same sizes
front and rear. stick the tires on, eyeball them.

hope this helps.

scott

Well, here we go. The 195/70r14's will be a bit taller, and a bit wider them
the 185/70r14's that came with the car. The 195/75r14's will be taller yet,
but about the same with, maybe a little narrower. Either should work fine. I
would go for the 195/70r14's myself. it would give it the lower profile,
wider look. But if you like the taller, thinner look of the oem tires, go for
the 195/75r14's. either should fit no problem.

Don't worry about it. For just a spare, it will be fine.

Let me tell you what I do (think) I know about tire sizes. The 185 or 195
should be a measurement of tread width in centimeters. The number 70, 75,
50, etc, is the sidewall height expressed as a percentage of the tread
width. Obviously, the 14, 15, 16, etc, is the rim diameter.

So, in effect, the larger the three digit number (185, 195), the wider the
tire. The larger the two digit number (60, 70, 75), the taller the tire...
when taking into account the rim size.
