We finally got my son's car back home from the body shop!

We spent the weekend putting on the new chrome moldings & bumpers.

The shop left out the rear quarter windows to make it "easy" for me to install
the new quarter ornaments.

I'm not sure they did me any favors. putting in those rear quarter windows was a
ROYAL pain in the A**!

I think it was especially difficult since I didn't take them out to have some
idea how to put them back in!

But I suppose it was worth it as the car is REALLY starting to look nice now!

I've updated the website with a 2nd page of pictures of the car now that it's
back home.

Lance, where did you get those hub caps. I like these as I can't afford the
real thing and I don't have a GT.

They have them at most of the major Mustang supply houses. I got mine at
National Parts Depot (npdlink.com <npdlink.com/> ).

NPD has them with black or red center caps

The black center ones are item # 1130-31K

The red center ones are item # 1130-32K

NPD has them for about $240 per set including the center caps, or about $40 a
piece without the center caps.

The center caps are the exact same ones used on the REAL styled steel wheels, so
you can buy them separate if desired.

I know CJ Pony Parts and Mustang Depot also have them, and I think they both
have them with blue center caps instead of black.

Lance.

Thanks Leland,

I said very nearly those same words to my son when I handed him the keys
this weekend.

We made a bargain last year when he turned 16 and started driving. The deal
was if he could go one full year with no tickets, no accidents, and kept his
grades up, then I would get the car painted any way he wants it.

He more than held up his end of the bargain and even kicked it up a notch.
During that year, he never once gave me any reason to regret letting "my
baby" drive "my other baby".

During the past year he was inducted into the National Honor Society in
school.

He's taking almost all AP and honors courses in school and is even taking a
virtual class on the internet.

In JROTC he became the Commanding Officer of his high schools JROTC unit.

In sports he became the World champion in TaeKwonDo weapons and he became
the Florida State Champion in TaeKwonDo Sparring.

And as odd as this sounds, This past year I've actually had PARENTS of
TEENAGE GIRLS call me up and ask if my son would date their daughter!!! And
THAT has happened SEVERAL TIMES now! (trust me, that's beginning to creep me
out a bit.)

And if that wasn't enough under normal circumstances, he did all this during
a time in which his mother, the love of my life, was diagnosed with Leukemia
and had to be hospitalized for two months and is only now, one full year
later, just beginning to be able to do normal "mom" things.

With a year like that, I HAD to hold up my end of the deal, even though it
meant I had to take out a loan on our home to do it!

So as proud as I am to show off the car, the truth is that the car is a
tribute to my son, who has surpassed my greatest expectations in so many
ways.

<snip>

"Good Luck and GOD BLESS!!!"

<snip>

I've been blessed beyond my wildest dreams. May God Bless us all.

Lance.

As a guy that's on the verge of having a son any day now... This is a
very nice story to hear versus how bad "today's kids" are.

Most excellent!

Looks great! I'm taking my 66 coupe in for paint in 2 or 3 weeks myself.
Couple questions. Can you tell me more about the seat upholstery work you
had done (both front and back)? Where did you get it? I haven't talked to
any shops yet but I was thinking about getting leather upholstery depending
on the cost but what you've done intrigues me a bit (it looks great). Also,
I see that you've got shoulder belts in the back. What belts did you buy?
Where specifically is the upper mount and how did you get that done? And if
the rear has them, then I'm sure the front does as well, so can you describe
what you did there as well? All I have is lap belts in the front and I
definitely want to add shoulder belts.

The kit I got calls for drilling through the rear quarter metal/body
and the floor pans (and comes with giant reinforcement washers). I'll
snap some pictures of my front three-point seat belt installation and
show you.

I didn't see the pictures, but I, too, am interested in hearing about
rear three-points.

Thanks!

I got the seatbelts from Wesco performance.
wescoperformance.stores.yahoo.net/resebe.html For the back I got the
"roadster" seatbelts and mounted the retractor up on the package tray.
There is not an existing point for it, I had to drill through the tray.

For the front seat, I purchased their "3 point retractable for convertible
and coupe" seatbelts. I drilled a hole through the door pillar and mounted
the shoulder pivot there. Then I drilled a hole through the floor of the
car and mounted the retractor. The rest of the belt bolts to existing
mounting points. I'll try to get some pictures and post it for you.

I got the seat upholstery at MustangsUnlimited.com
<mustangsunlimited.com/> It's the new "Sport" pony upholstery
with bolsters on the sides like "modern" seats. You MUST purchase both the
foam and the upholstery if you want to go with this type of upholstery.
I'm doing the work myself and I haven't finished the front seats yet.

Good luck, and post us some pictures as you progress!

Lance.

I did something similar for the front belts. I found some nice 3 point
retractable seat belts for $45 each at some hot rod site! They work
great. I attached the upper point where the stock mounts are behind the
headliner (on a '68 anyway).

Make sure to put big washers on the area you drill through the floor.
The sheet metal isn't going to hold without big strong washers to spread
the load.

Yeah, 68's had a stock mount points for the shoulder pivot, 66's have to have a
point fabricated, and the top of the door pillar is generally the recommended
spot to put it.

I'd LOVE to know where you got them for $45! I can't find 3 point retractables
for less than about $80 a piece anyplace.

Yeah, mine were about $200 for the set with the chrome buckles. If I
wanted plastic buckles they were slightly cheaper.

I'm actually not sure which way to go... door pillar or fabricated mount on
the roof. Now's obviously the time to decide since I'm getting paint done
very soon! Any good reasons to go one way or the other in terms of safety as
well as look and getting in the way of access to the back seat?

I did something similar for the front belts. I found some nice 3 point
retractable seat belts for $45 each at some hot rod site! They work great.
I attached the upper point where the stock mounts are behind the headliner
(on a '68 anyway).

Make sure to put big washers on the area you drill through the floor. The
sheet metal isn't going to hold without big strong washers to spread the
load.

Door pillar? You mean right behind the driver's side door under the
little rear window?

Higher is generally safer since it spreads out the loads on your body
more. Instead of trying to bend you into a little hammock shape (with
one point being the seat belt latch and the other being the top shoulder
mount) a higher mount will make a wider U in the hammock shape on
impact. This is why all modern cars mount up as high as possible
without the belt intruding on the neck area. The only time they don't
do this is when they can't, like on convertibles, since nearly any seat
belt is better than none.

I'm actually not sure which way to go... door pillar or fabricated mount
on the roof. Now's obviously the time to decide since I'm getting paint
done very soon! Any good reasons to go one way or the other in terms of
safety as well as look and getting in the way of access to the back
seat?

Yeah, 68's had a stock mount points for the shoulder pivot, 66's have to
have a point fabricated, and the top of the door pillar is generally the
recommended spot to put it.

I'd LOVE to know where you got them for $45! I can't find 3 point
retractables for less than about $80 a piece anyplace.

Lance.

Higher is "usually" better, but not always. I'm 5'5" tall and most modern
seatbelts cut me right across the throat. In an accident that would put much of
the restraining force directly on my neck, which at best would probably cause a
bad case of whiplash, and at worse would kill me or leave me paralyzed for life.

Therefore I usually wear a metal clip on the lap belt portion which holds the
shoulder portion closer to the center line of my body which helps prevent it
from cutting across my throat. When that's not available, I end up taking my
shoulder out and have the strap behind me where it does no good at all.

The door pillar mount puts the seatbelt perfectly across my left shoulder to my
right hip, so for me it's perfect. And my boss is 6'5" tall and it still fits
him comfortably too.

I prefer the lower mounting point because it isn't downright DANGEROUS to us
short guys, and still provides adequate protection for taller people.

That's also why many of the newer cars have an adjustable top mount that lets
you position the point up or down about 8 inches.

Lance.

How did that old song go? "Short people got no reason to..." - just kidding
of course! Those are some good thoughts. Next time I'm in my mustang and in
my new jeep I'll have to really give some thought to what would work best
for me.

Thanks for the feedback, Lance and Keven! Very helpful.

Oh yeah! Well You get rained on before me! . Just kiddin. I'm comfortable
with my height. Back in High School it was FANTASTIC being short. I kinda
dated a 5'9" girl and it was just plain WONDERFUL slow dancing at the
dances. My face was just at the right height to rest between her. uh.er.
Well, you get the picture.

Good luck, and whatever you decide, post some pictures of it someplace for
us to see.

Lance.
