I'm looking seriously at putting a 5 spd in place of a C4.
This will be behind a warm 289/302: mild cam, good intake ..
doubtful it will ever exceed 300 ft-lbs / 300 hp.

Is the Tremec3550 worth the extra $500-600 ?
Otherwise, I would be using the 90-93 V8 T5.

What are the thoughts on clutch cables ?
It seems scary, but a whole lot easier to install and maintain.
Anybody care to comment ?

I'm looking at Modern DriveLine for the whole kit. Comments about them or
other sources would also be appreciated.

Thanks,

I cabled. I like it a lot better than the stock linkage
(once adjusted). Adjusting took me a while, but that was
probably just me, it's not so bad to do now. There are a
couple of kits on the market. I went with one from DB
Performance, but I believe Windsor Fox also has one. I
can't really comment on how either would work for you as I
have a 351 with Super-comp headers and a T-56 in a 66 coupe
which provides an interesting combination of hurdles to
clear, but I have finally found a way to make the one I got
work fairly well. I'd check on both and take the less
expensive one and see if it works for me, if not send it
back and get the other. There is hardly anything to the one
from DB Performance, other than the fact that you have to
send them your clutch pedal assembly for modification and it
can take a while. If the one from Windsor Fox didn't
require this modification (I don't know if it does or not) I
would go with it.

Eric,
66 coupe with 351 & super comp headers backed by a T-56 ... oh yeah!
That is exactly what the plan is for my 67 coupe (currently 289/C4) can you
elaborate on what it took to get the T-56 in there?
What kind of torque does the T-56 handle?
what kind of transmission mount did you use?
what kind of hurdles did you have to overcome?
did you have clearance problems with the clutch cable and the super comp
headers?

any info would be appreciated, I'd like to learn from any mistakes you might
have had.

Eric,
66 coupe with 351 & super comp headers backed by a T-56 ...
oh yeah!
That is exactly what the plan is for my 67 coupe (currently
289/C4) can you
elaborate on what it took to get the T-56 in there?

The 66 engine compartment and trans tunnel are smaller than
the 67 so you may not have any issues at all, but what I ran
into was very limited space to bolt the trans and bell
housing up. The T56 comes with the bell housing attached, I
had to take it off the trans and put it on the motor
(preferably before the motor goes in) then bolt the trans to
the bell housing, I still had a hard time getting a torque
wrench on the upper bolts, but with an18" extension managed
to get them torqued to spec.
You will also need a custom drive shaft.

What kind of torque does the T-56 handle?

The aftermarket T-56 for Ford applications is rated at 440
ft. lbs.

what kind of transmission mount did you use?

I bought one from DB Performance, however after getting it I
figure I could have made one, escpecially since I had to
modify the one I bought before I was satisfied. The mount
it's self that bolts to the tranny is, I beleive, a late
model GM with the one center stud. The bracket (which is
what I had to modify) was a 1"X2" rectangular tube steel
with 2 -.25" steel plates welded at each end to fit on the
inside and outside of the frame rail. The tops of the steel
plates have two3/8" holes that you match by drilling through
the frame rail to give you two bolts on either side holding
the bracket up, mine was 1/8" short on one side and needed
the two plates moved out 1/8". In addition there was no
pivot for the parking brake. I bolted everything up, cut
the pivot bracket off of my old trans bracket and positioned
it so it would function and not interfere with anything and
welded it on the trans bracket.

what kind of hurdles did you have to overcome?

See above.

did you have clearance problems with the clutch cable and
the super comp
headers?

Like I said my engine compartment is smaller, the super
comps fit shock tower to shock tower (after denting a couple
tubes). The clutch cable mounts into the bell housing on
the T-56, which fell close enough to one of the tubes at the
collector that it would rest right up against it. I
fashioned an aluminum hook type bracket that I bolted to the
inner portion of the frame rail with the hook around the
cable pulling it away from the header by about 1/2", which
appears to be working well.

any info would be appreciated, I'd like to learn from any
mistakes you might
have had.

Hope you find some useful info here.

Bruce at Modern Driveline is a good guy to deal with, he's
trying hard to be successful and he will be based on his
attitide and goals. He's one of us, not just in it for a quick buck.
