I'm trying to decide whether or not to include the headrests in the
sport upgrade I plan to do. Mustangs Plus sells an entire kit that would
save significant money if I want to go with headrests but I'm not fully
convinced I'll be happy with the look of headrests in my 66 coupe. I
will be tinting my windows so I don't think it will stand out too much
from that perspective.

Has anyone included headrests in their upgrade? Or for that matter, has
anyone upgraded but decided NOT to do headrests? I'd be very interested
to hear opinions on how your cars look with the headrests, or for those
who decided against headrests, why you made that decision.

Also, I remember Lance saying he decided to not install the front seat
upholstery himself. Has anyone done it themselves? I would definitely
like to have a go at it but I would like to know from those who have
done so already how it went considering I've never done upholstery
before.

Thanks!

Jeff and all--

I'd be interested in hearing about this, too. I'm going to upgrade
the interior of my 66 shortly to the new pony-looking interior as the
older seats bother my back on long drives. I have a friend who
installed it in their 66 vert and it looks great--feels much better
than the standard Pony seats, too.

Any and all experiences are good to hear!

Thanks!

I've included the headrests in my upgrade but I haven't had my seats
re-done yet (have the upholstery and headrests in the garage).

Mustangs Plus has a 66 coupe in the showroom with the red/white sport
upholstery WITH headrests. Looks beautiful, and they let me sit on
one of the seats - talk about comfortable. That experience sold me on
doing the headrests.

Yep, I did the back seats myself, but when the seam started tearing in the
front, I decided to let a professional handle it.

I plan on doing the headrests for sure, but funding was running low and I had to
cut some corners to stay in the budget, so the headrests got the
axe...temporarily :-(

One thing to note. The sport upholstery does raise the seats about 1 1/2", so
if you're a large person, then you might want to take that into consideration.
The steering wheel hits my legs..

But they are the most comfortable seats!!! I love em!

Lance.

I just got a nice Grant Walnut wood "Classic Series" steering wheel for
Christmas. 13" instead of 15" should do the trick nicely to get it off my lap.
And it has 3 spokes with holes in them and a Mustang logo horn button to keep
that nice original pony interior look to it.

Steering might get a little harder, but a nice upper-body workout while driving
wouldn't be so bad.....

Yeah, I've got the same wheel, but with the black foam grip instead
of the wood.

Yup he did. It took a bit of getting used to, but I like the look. And, as
someone who lost a mustang to a rear end accident years ago, the headrests
would help keep your head from going all over the place if you get popped
from the rear. I'll probably do it, but they are expensive.

I re-did my seats last year. The back seat is easy so definitely do that
your self. The front seats are tricky and the hog rings will do a number on
your hands and knuckles. If you can find a local upholstery shop that will
do them for a reasonable price then I recommend taking that route. A pro
should be able to do the front seat within 1 to 2 hours each, tops. I
re-did everything like original stock with no headrests. But if I had to do
it again I would get the new "comfortable" covers, buns, and headrests, like
the ones from TMI (I think that's what you are doing?). Let us know how it
turns out. I still want to add headrests to mine but I'm still looking for
good pictures of aftermarket headrests on stock seats.

Which headrests did you get? I've seen 2 kinds. One kind is flat, has a flat
piece of metal attaching it to the seat, and it doesn't look very adjustable.
The other kind is more form-fitting, has two round bars attaching it to the
seat, and it looks like it is adjustable up/down and tilt front/back.

Here's a little trick to getting the covers on during the winter months.
While the wife's out, stick the new covers in the dryer with a couple towels
just long enough to get them warmed up not hot just warm and workable. Takes
all the little wrinkles out.

I got the ones that go with the sport upholstery. I bought it as a kit from
Mustangs Plus, but I guess I won't know the specifics of it until it
arrives. How adjustable I don't know, but from the pictures I assume it must
be adjustable up and down.

Well if you're not planning to do a conversion to the sport style seats, you
may still be able to use the headrests that go along with that. If it were
me it would at least be worth a call to Mustangs Plus, etc. to see if it's
possible. Unless there is some supporting structure in the special sport
foam, then it must rely on the structure of the stock seat itself so it
might just work. Whether it would look appropriate with a standard looking
seat I have no idea.

Yup he did. It took a bit of getting used to, but I like the look. And, as
someone who lost a mustang to a rear end accident years ago, the headrests
would help keep your head from going all over the place if you get popped
from the rear. I'll probably do it, but they are expensive.

Jeff and all--

I'd be interested in hearing about this, too. I'm going to upgrade the
interior of my 66 shortly to the new pony-looking interior as the older
seats bother my back on long drives. I have a friend who installed it in
their 66 vert and it looks great--feels much better than the standard Pony
seats, too.

Any and all experiences are good to hear!

Thanks!

Here's a little trick to getting the covers on during the winter months.
While the wife's out, stick the new covers in the dryer with a couple towels
just long enough to get them warmed up not hot just warm and workable. Takes
all the little wrinkles out.

I just received my pony sport upholstery kit! I won't have time immediately
to do anything with it, but my initial impression is very good! It appears
to be very high quality (not that I'm some upholstery expert or anything).
And for those of you who are curious about the headrests, they are fully
adjustable - raising/lowering plus rotating forward/backward (I remember
someone asked about the adjustability).

Oh, man. This is the last of the eyesore improvements, so I can't wait to
get it installed. (My driver side upholstery is so cracked on the bottom
part that half of what you see is foam, and mostly disintegrated foam at
that!)

I absolutely LOVE the pony sport upholstery we put in my son's car! The
only complaint I have is the seats sit about 1" higher than stock AND they
are firmer than stock, so you actually end up sitting about 2" higher than
stock.

Once you get used to that, they're WONDERFUL!

Let us know how the headrests work out. Take plenty of pictures for us!

For reference, here's some links to my son's seats:

We did the back seat ourselves, but opted to have a professional do the
front seats.
