Hi All

I have a black cable in my engine compartment that I
think is my speedometer or odometer cable. Where does
it plug in? The cable itself is about 1/4 inch thick,
black and has a fitting on the end that screws onto
something. Coming out of the cable is about a 3 inch
tiny metal cable. Does this sound like the odometer
cable or speedometer cable?

Neither are working at present.

Thanks
Sue

They are one and the same. The speedo cable drives both the speed
indicator (MPH) and the odometer (Miles).

It should "plug" into the back center of the speedo unit.

Yes, that sounds like the speedo cable. One end screws
into the back of the speedometer and the other end screws
into the tailshaft housing on the passenger side of the
transmission. .... at least for a 4 speed.

Since I believe you have a C4, it may be somewhere else. If the
cable is detached from the transmission it means you
have a hole that will leak, so I assume you are looking
at the speedometer end of the cable.....

Hi Jay

Where is the speedo unit? I've had a quick look
around my engine bay for where this cable plugs in and
I can't find a spot. Do I have to get under the car
to plug it in?

Thanks

Hi Walt

No I'm talking about the end that's in the engine bay.
I had the engine detailed and I'm guessing this cable
got unplugged in the process. I'm just trying to
figure out where it goes.

Thanks

The speedometer cable has two ends:

End 1 (under car) -- Plugs into the transmission. There is usually a
"head" on the end that has teeth on it and it slides right into the tranny
hole, which as another gear in it that turns the head of the cable.

Cable -- Routes from your transmission, usually up towards the front of the
car, near the steering column, then through a hole in the firewall to the
back of the dash area.

End 2 (in the dash) -- Plugs into the speedometer (the one you "view"winking smiley,
usually it goes through the firewall, then into the back of the speedometer.

Let me know if you still have questions.

It goes through a hole in the firewall and connects
to the back of the speedometer. The inner part of
the cable has a square end that drives the speedometer.
The outer sheathing has a ring that screws on to retain
the cable. Not hard to install, but not easy.....

Hi Walt

Actually the end that goes through the firewall and
connect to the speedometer is connected. The end I
have is the one that connects to the transmission, so
I'm finding out. I didn't know that I had to get
under the car to plug it in. I will crawl under the
car and look for the spot. Any hints where to look as
I'm mechanically challenged, just a newbie learning
about cars.

Thanks

I've never owned an early Mustang with an Automatic
trans (gee, how wierd..) so I can't tell you
exactly where..someone else can...

So the end you have has the plastic gear on it and a metal
piece that requires a bolt to attach to the tranny....

I'm surprised the transmission isn't leaking, but then
maybe there is no fluid in the tailshaft housing... hmmm.
Do ATs have a tailshaft housing?

I guess you haven't gotten a Shop Manual yet? I would
make that a priority, as the manual will answer 90%
of your questions, with pictures!

Hi Brain

Thanks for the info. I will look for the hole under
the car tonight. If it's my speedometer cable does
that mean my car has been leaking tranny fluid since
it's been unplugged?

Sue,

The speedometer cable connects to the automatic
transmission on the drivers side of the transmisson
near the shift linkage. There will be a hole there
that the geared end of the cable fits into. The gears
on the cable will connect to gears in the
transmission. There is then a locking clip that hold
the cable in position. (or at least there is supposed
to be)

like someone else said , the hole will be on the drivers side of the
trans......look "straight up from the back edge of the trans pan (flat square
"box-looking" pan on the very bottom of the trans)....the hole is on the side of the
trans almost straight up from the back edge of that pan.

right beside the hole you will see a bolt hole......with any luck the bolt
will still be in it.this bolt holds a flat wish bone shaped piece of metal that
holds the end of the speedo cable in the transmission.

let me know if your bolt is missing and i will take mine out and let you know
the size of the bolt so you can get one at your local hardware store. if you
are missing the wishbone piece you will have to get a new one from a junkyard
or one of the mustang parts suppiers , they are probably not very expensive
but it will take a couple of days to ship it to you. maybe a local transmission
shop might have one lying around???

hope this helps....

if it has a metal ball it is your parking brake cable

very good possibility.....i would think that if it had been leaking you would
smell and even see smoke from all that trans fluid burning off your exhaust
pipes though.

i had an 83 ranger that leaked trans fluid on the exhaust and it always
looked like it was on fire there was so much smoke.....haha

this is why i think you may have the parking brake cable......???
