I have a '66 coupe that I was considering installing a roll bar in only to
get a 4 point harness. Currently I have the 3" lapbelts only. My issue is I
still like to take my kids & wife to cruises and an occasional trip to Sonic
in this car too, so I definately want to keep the rear seat in the car.
Unfortunately I have never seen a coupe with a roll bar that also had the
rear seat installed.

With a 4 point roll bar installed I understand I can use the rear seat, but
can I still use the interior rear quarter panel covers - or whatever they're
called? The roll bar attaches to the inside wheel well so I wasn't sure if
this would still work. I think for what I'm doing a 'hoop' style roll bar
(only 2 ounting points instead of 4) would be great but I don't see ay of
these in any of the Mustang catalogs, are these just to Mickey Mouse to use?

Your thoughts are appreciated.
Robb

Check out this site Racing/Competition Seat Belts Restraint Systems-Andover
Automotive,Inc
www.andoauto.com/racing.htm. They show how you can use a "Y" harness. It would
extend over the seat, then connect to the floorpan below and behind the seat
back. Depending on installation, you might have to forgo the shoulder harness
when there was a passenger. Another possibility is Simpson Race Products
www.simpsonraceproducts.com/. they are a major supplier of restraints, race
suits, helmets, etc. Call them and explain the situation, they may have a
solution that does not require a roll bar. (BTW, their home office is located
about 2.5 hours from the MCA Grand nationals in Houston)

Robb,

Mustang Plus (800-999-4289) carries a rear seat usable roll bar that
fits a 65-70 coupe. Last catalog I had said it cost $180.95.

I'd be kind of careful with the 'Y' harness and installation you propose.
I've heard that you want to keep the end of harness above the shoulders so on
impact, you don't compress the spine. I've read users put a removable
brace across the rear seating area to raise the 'Y' up. Remove the brace
when you have your friends in the back seat and stowaway the harness.

Jeff S. and others will know more.

If Robb wants a 4 point harness and a back seat, I'd look for a 4 point
cage (two on floor, two at rear wheel wells) and modifying the rear interior
panels to accept the bars. And heavely pad the bars in either case. I'd
hate to bang my head on it during an impact. I think Lev used a Mustangs Plus
roll bar (Lev, you still around?) in his 66 (coupe?) but was not happy with
the effort to get it to fit. A two point might work but be sure to tie it
into something more than the floor pan.

I walked in on the middle of this thread (new listserv subscriber), but I
might be able to help. I put a Simpson Y type 4 point harness in my 66
coupe. I fastened the ends of the lap belt to the stock seatbelt
locations, and I attached the end of the shoulder belts to the package
shelf edge behind the top of the back seat. This puts the end of the belt
just about level with my shoulders. I reinforced the underside of the
package shelf edge with angle iron which I welded in. If you do it right
the rear seat still fits fine, and you can unclip the shoulder belt from
the package shelf if you want to let a passenger ride behind the driver. I
hooked the crotch belt to the floor in front of the seat riser; I
reinforced the bolt hole with steel plate. This system works well,
requires little butchery and (best of all) can be easily hidden for that
stock look.
