I'm seriously considering the new "pony sport" upholstery since it looks
like doing leather is going to be way out of my price range. So that has me
thinking, if I do get the pony sport, I should probably plan to eventually
upgrade everything applicable to the pony interior option (e.g. door
panels). But I don't know what all that would include. Who can list all of
the items that were part of the pony option? And was there any exterior
items that were a part of that?

In '66, it included:

- Different door panels with stainless steel trim
- woodgrain finish on the glove box and instrument bezel
- woodgrain finish on console (if equipped)
- courtesy lights in both doors
- different back seat cover
- different front seat cover, requiring different seat buns

I'm sure I'm missing a couple other things, but that's most of it.

Different inside door handles, too. Woodgrain on instrument bezel.
Woodgrain steering wheel, right?

Handles, yes (knew I was forgetting something). Woodgrain I
mentioned. The steering wheel was an option "Deluxe Steering Wheel". I
think it was part of the pony package but it could also be ordered separately.

all fine but..
different seat belts?

i thought that the deluxe seatbelts were a separate option....can anyone
confirm???

also- deluxe woodgrain trim on the console is not a given. numereous books
show the deluxe interior with a black camera case finish on the console. (in
fact one of my cars came this way. so i am sure about this..)

The woodgrain was in 66. If you have a 65 GT, the standard gauge
cluster is replaced by the 5 hole one that all 66's have. If memory
serves. . . .

My convertible is a "Week 1" Pony interior (April 21, 1965) and it does have
the wood grain 5 hole (66 style) instrument bezel, the wood grained glovebox
door, the wood grained pistol grip handles, pony upholstery front & rear,
carpeted kick panels and pony door panels with lights.

According to the door tag it is a true Deluxe interior. Although I can't
prove it was always wood grained, I know that as far back as 1972 it had the
wood grained interior.

Lance.

Isn't there some difference between the wood grained bezel on a 65
and 66--maybe the inset that runs around the edge?

Maybe I'm just plain wrong! Wouldn't be the first time today. . . .

My 65 Coupe has a pony interior but has the standard door handles.
They look old but I have no idea if they were there originally or
were put in place of the pistol grip handles along the way. They look
old but that doesn't really tell anything. Everything else mentioned
is on mine too.

Yes, on April 17, 1965 the deluxe "Pony" interior became available to the
public.

My convertible has a build date of April 21, 1965; a mere 5 days after the
introduction of the deluxe interior.

According to Mustang Monthly, the 65 pony interior consisted of the following
Major Pony Interior Components :

Five-dial instrument panel
Woodgrain inserts on gauge cluster and glovebox door
Uniquely styled glovebox door
Molded door panels with Thunderbird-style, pistol-grip inside door-release
handles
Door-mounted courtesy lights
Kick panels with carpeting on lower half and stainless trim strip
Running horse-embossed bolstered seat upholstery
Woodgrain Deluxe steering wheel
Vinyl-covered quarter-trim panels (coupe/Conv only)
Bright trim cap on quarter-trim panel (coupe/Conv only)
Bright-trimmed pedals

There are also some other things like the oil sending unit door linkage
extensions, etc that need to be done to upgrade a 65 with standard interior. A
65 GT or any 66 wouldn't require the sending units because it already uses
gauges instead of lights.

Please remember that the date on your door tag was a projected build date and not the date the car was completed on. We've seen these off as much as three weeks (earlier and later)

True, but it does place my pony interior as very early. And using the
consecutive number portion of the VIN and "the classic mustang decoder
disk", I can determine that in all probability it was within a few days of
that date.

Since Ford graciously destroyed all records of the 65-66 sales, I'll never
know for sure....

Lance.

There wasn't a "pony radio", just a radio.
