Hello,
I'm not very sure of this, but I think you should use the same color than
your hood (black!) maybe a little more flat.
All photos I've seen, show a very dark flat black for the grill.
Use a undercoat after you prepared your grill, then spray your paint.
Good luck ;-)
Ps : If you own some docs about the Mach 1 1969, feel free to share it with
me for my web site : chien.com/mustang/

I have used: Engine paint, automotive paint, wheel paint, vinyl
paint. If the grill is metal, any proper finish will work. We used
basic engine paint on our '66 coupe. If the grill, or bits of it, are
plastic, engine paint or vinyl paint will work fine. Otherwise, some
of the solvents in automotive paint 'might' attack the plastic.

Jeff,
A couple of questions about the paint below:
* Is this black paint? If so, weren't original grills black plastic =
and not painted?
* A friend has a grill painted silver on the front edge - says its =
"ultra-rare". What model would this have come on originally? Or was it =
an option? Thanks,
Jeff Kennard... (email redacted)

For what it's worth (A great Buffalo Springfield song by the way), I =
have personally witnessed the chrome-edged '69 grille on a friend's =
low-mileage original Boss 429. He explained to me at the time that his =
researched showed it as a partial-year supplier-related run.
I've never really payed a great deal of close attention to the '69 =
grille color, but do know the '70 color is a charcoal metallic that is =
roughly the same as the rocker moldings and wheelcovers on the '70 Mach =
1. This is not at all close to black, but more a dark grey with plenty =
of metallic in it. I realize the '70 grille is a very different animal =
(waaaaay simpler) but I thought I'd throw this out for the fellow '70 =
brethren (and sistren).

Sorry this took so long to get back to. No the original grills were =
not really black but a very dark gray ... kind of like the interior =
"black". For those who are not aware Ford list black and the interior =
color but the color is really dark charcoal metallic.
The paint color I mentioned can be used to freshen up a old grill, not =
that they were originally painted. Hope this explains the email.
As for the standard 69 grills with the chrome (plastic chrome) forward =
edge. Parts catalogs from the early 70's reference these as Grande =
grills though not one I know has ever seen the grill on an original car. =
My feeling is that this was a part that was put into production and what =
ever project it was meant for was canceled.... kind of like all the 71 =
Boss 302 parts that were made. In both examples NOS over the counter =
parts bounce from collector to collector year after year.
Hope this helps
