I noticed I have a couple of loose letters on the deck lid. It doesn't look like I can get to where they go through to reattach nuts. Do I need to buy replacement letters and have a body shop do it or is there a way I can access it? The inside of the deck lid has access holes but it doesn't seem like I can get in there to reattach. Also, I noticed on one of the front fenders, the MUSTANG script writing has one prong that also appears to no longer have a nut on it. Suggestions?

Most of the emblems on these cars use what are referred to (out here
in California) as barrel nuts, which are pushed in the body holes
drilled for the emblems first, and then the prongs from the emblems
sit in them. There's no threads on them; they have little spikes on
them that expand behind the sheet metal when the prong from the
emblem is inserted.

Almost all of the mustang parts suppliers sell them in packages for
less than $1. Your best bet is to CAREFULLY pry off the offending
letters/emblems, replace the barrel nuts and then push them back on.
Most emblems can be removed with a screwdriver, but use a cloth
underneath it so you don't damage/scratch your paint. If the emblem
is loose enough you might be able to swing it out of the way, put a
new barrel nut in there and put it back. Again, exercise caution with
the paint.

I got some barrel nuts today for the letters. So the nuts go on the letter tines before they go in the holes of the deck lid or do they barrel nuts sit in the holes and the tines of the letters push through them (sorry, I've never replaced them before)?

Push the barrel nuts into the holes, then push the pins from the letters
into the barrel nuts. That causes the nuts to expand and hold the letters
firmly in place.

Put the barrel nuts in the holes first and then gently push the tines of
the letters into the nuts. It's fairly easy. If they are hard to push
in you might use a little lubricant like silicone spray to make them
easier to insert. Good Luck!
