Fuel Vapor in Car

Every time i put gas in my car there is a strong odor of fuel for about 1/2
hour. I just put a new Edebrock 600 CFM Performer Carburetor with an
electric choke. Any suggestions on where to check to see why i'm getting
this strong fuel vapor inside the car? I have a 1966 Coupe with 289 V8.
Just had the engine rebuilt.

Did you check the trunk and see if you have a leak with the filler tube/hose
assembly? This is fairly common and can be easily spotted next time you
fill up.
Also next time you start the car after it's been sitting for a while check
the fuel line connections at the fuel pump on up to the carburetor. There's
a chance that one of the connections is loose as a result of the carb.
change. Also look around the base of the carb. to see if any of the fuel
bowls might be leaking.

Sure, look in the trunk! Most fuel leaks in Mustangs
occur in that area. look around the filler tube and
lift the mat if you have one and look for rust. Pin
holes can also cause this problem, although the smell

if they put the nozzle in a certain way it leaks. But once you stop pumping
the gas it stops. I thought it may be the filler tube/hose assembly. But
then again the leaks is not in the trunk it comes out and dribs thru the
bottom of the tank, not in the trunk. But would a leak in the rear cause a
strong odor inside the car?

The strong odor of gas could be coming from a small leak because as you
drive the car it is carried back by the breeze of the the car moving. The
gas smell is a strong one because an additive is put into the fuel for just
that reason. Just as an odorant is placed in propane for safety reasons. A
bar of Lava Soap rubbed on the leak will stop it for a while so you can see
if there are any other places gas is leaking out too.

The problem might be the sealing gasket at the front of the tank, where the
sending unit is installed. Check to see if the gas is dribbling down the
front of the tank, under the care. If not, rust pinholes are probably the
culprit. I had two very small rust spots on my tank that developed
pinholes. After draining and pulling the tank, inspection revealed only
those two small areas of damage. POR 15 putty was applied according to
directions. No more leak and I saved some money by not having to buy a new
tank.

you smell it in the interior if the leak is in the rear. In fact, When my
carb gasket had to be replaced, I didn't notice that odor. (in spite of a
small pool of gas on the intake manifold. kind of a scary thought) I think
the engine cooling fan dissipates it so fast. But when my tank had a leak, I
could always smell it.

Oh Yeah. I forgot you could use POR-15 on fuel tanks (leaks). When my tank
had a leak, the PO had tried to patch it with something. I replaced the
whole thing. New tanks are "only" $95 - $120, and once I finished, I felt a
lot more sure of it not leaking again.
(I did get pretty nervous when I took out the old tank that didn't have a
drain cock. I kept envisioning a wrench slipping and causing a spark! I even
used a socket and handle made of that spark-resistant material.)

What I'd do, for your piece of mind, is to systematically check everything
in the fuel system for leaks...
1) Decent seal at the cap?
2) Filler neck gasket to the body?
3) Filler hose from the neck to the tank?
*) I dont think the seal between the tank and the trunk has anything to do
with it, unless its hiding a real rust problem...
4) Drain plug
5) seal between the outlet/fuel gage and tank
6) hose between the outlet and fuel line
7) fuel line to fuel filter
8) fuel filter to carb inlet line
9) carb
check them all... Its usually pretty clear when something under the car has
been leaking... Its either obviously damp/clean/discolored when it should
be dirty/dry...

cleanliness... dont let fuel get on your hands, clothes, exterior of the
car... a "leak" i had once was just that I usually ended up dripping some
fuel on the bumper as I'd remove the hose handle, and I'd clean it up with
a papertowel, thus getting fuel on my hands...

Regarding the smells getting into the passenger compartment: Those little
plastic vents found in the door jambs carry fresh air back to the trunk,
which then comes back into the cab from under the back seat. Designed that
way for fresh air circulation. Any tiny amount of fuel in the trunk will be
smelled until it evaporates.

Regarding the smells getting into the passenger compartment: Those little
plastic vents found in the door jambs carry fresh air back to the trunk,
which then comes back into the cab from under the back seat. Designed that
way for fresh air circulation. Any tiny amount of fuel in the trunk will be
smelled until it evaporates.

One last place to look for a leak is the seam of the
tank itself. The seam that I am referring to is where
the top half of the tank and the bottom half of the
tank are spot-welded together. I had a similar
problem in my 65 Fastback that drove me crazy for about
a year. I replaced all of the things already mentioned
in previous replies. I finally notice the seeping at
the seam when I removed the tank and leaned up against
the garage wall with about 1/2 gal of gas in it. I
kept noticing that no matter how clean I wiped the edge
of the tank that was resting on the floor, a small
amount kept reappearing. I leaned the tank with the
"top" (the top being the floor of the trunk) of the
tank against the wall.
I just bought a new tank and solved my problem.
