Hey gang
This is for anyone with knowledge on the 71-73 front spoiler. Specifically
mounting one on the front valance.
I picked one up (on sale of course) for my car that never had one. The guys
at the body shop have tried and tried to mount it and nothing looks correct.
I have found no mention in any of the Ford manuals. We have procured photos
of all three years with a spoiler attached - looks simple, but no go. They
are meticulous and will not make any wholes until it is right - very nice of
them.
Was/Is there a different valance used in order to mount/attach these
spoilers? Is the spoiler different on the 1, 2 or 3? Was there a spacer or
other item on the valance that assisted in the fit. Are the spoilers the
came for Mustang and Cougar, coupe Vs. Convertible? In which case I could
have the wrong spoiler!
This one is visually very close to all the pictures we have come up with but
one can never be certain without physical, side by side, comparisons.
Anyone on the list in the Denver metro area with a 1971 -with- a spoiler on
it? Where could we meet? At the body shop? This is the last thing they have
to do and the car can come home (until I take it out for the top and details
like that). Then I can get the drive line in to it, then may be drive it
next year - I keep moving that finish date...
Thank you for any assistance and more if you can provide physical
comparisons...

You're not crazy; my 72 Mach I had a (non-factory) front spoiler - black ABS
plastic. It never hung right; I took it off and tried for weeks to make it
fit. But it never looked bad from a few feet away. So I settled for solidly
attached, and not flopping.

Per my references, only the 69-70 Boss 302, 69-70 Boss 429, 70 Shelby
GT350 & GT500 and 71 Boss 351 offered front spoilers. Each of the four
I've mentioned above were different. I don't think Ford offered a front
spoiler option for other Mustangs. But who knows what the dealers did.
Very few 71-73 cars ever had them when new. And some Cougars had them,
but I'm sure that they used one of the ones I listed above.

No, no special valance. My gut tells me you have A) a really poorly made
spoiler
a 69-70 Boss 302 spoiler that is the wrong shape for your 71 convt.
I say a Boss 302 spoiler because the 69-70 Boss 429 and 70 Shelby spoilers
were smaller and probably wouldn't fit.
> Are the spoilers the came for Mustang and Cougar, coupe Vs. Convertible?
No, since they didn't offer it for anything but the Boss 351 in '71.
Buy one from a mail-order house; at least you'd know what you have.

Just curious, did you order the spoiler?
I can't find an option listing for a front spoiler in the Ford literature
for '72 Mustangs, and it's not listed as part of the Mach I package either.
In fact, the only front spoiler I can find for 1971-73 Mustangs is the one
that came standard with the Boss 351. Do you have the original invoice/option
list for your car?
I'm sure that you got the car with the spoiler from the dealer. What
I'd like to know is did the spoiler come with the car from the factory,
or did the dealer add it. And was that at your request, or did they
add it on their own?
Thanks for sharing your experience.

I bought it from the original owner and he said it came with front and rear
spoilers. It has the aluminum adjustable rear spoiler and a plastic front
spoiler. He said he had replaced the front spoiler several times, but that
it did come on the car from the lot. Whether the dealer installed it or not
I don't know.
