Looks like there may be another rack and pinion for classic mustangs available soon, from flaming-river...
dvsrestorations.com/nov03.htm
Thought I would see what kind of feedback this generates.
From looking at the picture, does it look like the brackets install the rack "upside down" ? The blurb says it comes with a tilt-column, which is nice, but I wonder how much...
I'm interested on thoughts of how this compares to the TCP and other rack and pinion upgrade solutions available/forthcoming...
BTW, I've currently got the TCP rack on my 68...

Depending on the rack used, if it came from a late model
Mustang which is a "front" steer, it would need to be
installed upside down because early Mustangs are
"rear" steer. It's much nicer for the car to
turn left when you steer left...

Apparently you can do something similar with ball-and-worm steering
boxes if you swap in a worm that goes the other way. This is from a
flathead Ford list after someone did this, and the solution:

Hi
If you look where the pinion is, for a "rear steer" the pinion
must be on top of the rack. For "front steer", the pinion is below the
rack.
I'm in the middle of making a power R & P system for my Mach 1
here in England. So many long hours studying steering geometry, to find
out what matters and what doesn't. I would buy a ready designed system,
but $3000 - $3500 by the time shipping, VAT, and customs duty is paid.
If far too much!!
Rob
Ps if the rack is a flipped front steer, it must be from a right drive
vehicle? or the input shaft turned around?

Hey Chris,
I'm kind of curious to hear what you think of the TCP rack on your 68. =) Is
it power or manual? Is it worth the price? I'm just dying to get some modern
steering in my kids, but the price of the current units makes it prohibitive.
The Flaming River conversion looks like one of their Omni "rear-steer" set ups
combined with appropriately worked out brackets. Looks relatively simple and
straightforward, but I wonder how much a "quick ratio" rack really feels like
a power rack (as they say it does) when trying to parallel park or perform
other slow speed turns--when you really want the power assist.
Thanks for the heads up...maybe with this and Sixto on the move it'll give TCP
$omething to think about...

Looks fairly "cheap". About $1300 for the swap, including the column. And
you can buy it without the colum if you like to hack things.

Oh yeah, the prices were right there...somehow I missed that the first time...now that I've learned how to scroll down...
Sounds pretty good since it includes the tilt, but doesn't look like they have a power-steering option, which makes it impractical for most daily drivers (like me) -- I guess I'm a bit skeptical about the comment "Flaming River has now introduced it own line of true end steer, quick ratio racks that feel like power racks." Physics and experience would seem to contradict the combination of "quick ratio" and "feels like power racks"... although I would love it if it were true! idea --> include a giant hot air balloon which is attached to the front bumper to keep the weight off the front wheels while steering at slow speeds.
