So with the new paint I'm planning to replace my door handles as well as the
trunk lock. If I want my ignition and doors to use the same key, and ideally
even the trunk as well, what do I have to do? The key mechanism in my
existing driver door seems pretty worn out so I don't want to reuse the guts
of it.

And while I'm at it, is there any chance I'll be able to end up with one key
working for my glove box too? So one key for doors, trunk, ignition, and
glove box.

And while I'm at it, any comments on the quality and appearance of the
"standard" door handles vs. the concours quality ones? I'm not planning to
show, but on the other hand I am getting a very nice paint job.

The trunk uses a different style key from the ignition/doors. You can have
your door locks rekeyed by a locksmith to be the same as the ignition, or
you can just buy a set of ignition and door locks for probably less
money. They're pretty easy to replace.

As for door handles & cost: put it in perspective of what you're doing to
the car. If you're spending a bundle on paint and restoration, spend the
few bucks to make sure you get good repros. Don't cheapen out at the last
minute. The problem is quality & appearance are pretty subjective...

Yeah, I knew the keys were different but I thought perhaps there was a
different lock from a different year or car or whatever that might make it
doable. It's just one extra key to have to carry around.

I definitely don't want to go cheap, but at the same time if there's going
to be no perceptible difference then why spend the extra $40. I guess the
question really boils down to what am I getting when I pay that extra $40?
Thicker chrome? A more perfect finish? A higher quality opening mechanism?

Thanks Dan.

The idea was, if you loaned the car to someone or gave the ignition key
to a valet, your goodies in the glovebox and trunk would be relatively
safe. I still like that idea even today. Even dropping the car off for
an alignment - it's nice to know I can throw the ____ in the trunk.

I've had my 73 351 C 2bbl for 18 years and recently heard noises so took
it to my guy Phil about 20 miles away (done my honestly car for 15 years
) who said I have a noisy lifter but not to worry yet (about $500 to
replace all 16 so lets leave it a while.)
Last week I took it to an exhaust shop locally to fix a loose hanger. He
told me the noise is not from the hanger but from the bottom end of the
motor---bearings ,which his pal,2 doors up,"the auto mechanic "
confirmed.
Anyway, when I got home, I checked the oil and found it was 2 qts
LOW---it NEVER uses much oil-maybe a quart in 800 miles.I called my guy
who assured me it was full 2 weeks and 150 miles ago.
I've been using 10/40 for older cars.I put in 2 qts,noises got
better. Now,I am noticing again and am worried I have a major problem and
its not easy getting to and from Phils.
I wonder if the muffler guy managed to drain out 2 qts?
How can I diagnose a bearing noise ?
Shall I switch to a 10/50 oil?

Thanks,
Adrian

I can tell you from experience, unless you live in a rust free state and
handle your car with gloves on (so no salt gets on the door handles),
the quality of chrome you buy is essential.

We've all been spoiled by Ford quality chrome. Ford OEM chrome is
triple plated with thick plating. Taken care of, it will last 10-20
years and still look great nearly new, even with everyday use.

Asian repro chrome is just the opposite of that. Most of the stuff they
sell now won't last 2 years without showing corrosion related dimples.
Bumpers, door handles, etc. I've done it all, and I've been burned.

I bought cheap door handles and was impressed with the quality of the
part when I got it. The chrome was spotless, but within 2 years, it was
dimpling. Now it looks horrible, and I wish I'd spent more money on it
to get a quality part.

Get chrome with a lifetime warranty if possible. Then they at least
intended it to last. Cheap Asian chrome is just what you pay for. Get
chrome made in USA if possible, just because the quality really is that
much better. If not, Taiwan is usually much better than China.

If you have a place plate a part like a bumper, make sure it's triple
plated (which lays down two different metals before the chrome to make
sure the chrome will stick and the base metal won't corrode through it)
and thick enough to last.

I was able to get a complete set of matching keys for my 1968 through one of the Mustang parts catalogs. Mine happen to be American Pony Parts out of Blaine, Washington. I think most of the catalogs list them, including the glove box.
