I finally pulled my '69 428 CJ apart today and surprise surprise,
she's got a Crane cam in her. Does anyone out there have any Crane cross
reference material? The #'s are as follows;
HMV-272-2-NC
CRANE
34 49 86
0349 S
If someone has the specs for cam I would appreciate hearing from you.
Second, I noticed the oil filter was Ford blue w/ no identifying marks
or label. Does anyone know what color Ford painted oil filters at the
factory? I remember when I was a Ford dealership mechanic, all new cars
came in w/ grey oil filters. The one on the CJ has a baked on finish, so
it's doubtful it was painted by a previous owner. When I bought this
engine it had headers, Edelbock alum intake and chrome valve covers, and
the Crane cam previously mentioned. I can't imagine anybody would do
this kind of work and not change oil & filter on a regular basis.
Someone please put my mind at ease and tell me that this is an
aftermarket filter missing the label.

Mike

Mike,

Original oil filters were white with a red label, painted on, so fear
not, this is not an original filter, from memory, I believe AC/Delco
filters were the dark blue, similar to Ford blue...someone probably got
a deal on Delco filters and took the labels off :-0

Sorry, Mike - I have Ford specs galore, but no aftermarket replacement
stuff. Personally, I'd call Crane.

Engine ("corporate"winking smiley Blue

That's later on...earlier (Rotunda), they were black

An original would have embossed "Autolite" or "Motorcraft" letering
on the closed end.

As shown in the March 1994 Mustang Monthly article highlighting Bob
Perkins' '68-1/2 428 CJ engine (without car attached), "Original oil
filters, installed at the assembly plant, were painted blue while off the
engine, and later screwed onto their adaptor. Instead of spending money on
screening-in the Autolite logo and script on factory-installed oil filters
(like the logos found on service replacement filters), Ford used blue
Autolite FL-1 oil filters, usually stamped with a date code or an
inspector's code along with the engineering part number. On this filter,
"O.K. 1021" is an inspector's code."

The filter shown has a *raised* "AUTOLITE...AUTOLITE..." stamped around the
circumference of the top of the filter. If your filter has no marks
whatsoever, I'd therefore guess it's probably *not* a factory original.
