hello all ,

my c4 trans ('66 coupe , 289) has a bad leak coming from the shift lever
shaft. i bought a new seal , removed the kickdown lever , neutral start switch
and shift linkage. i was hoping that the new seal would be accessible from the
outside of the trans case. it seems i may need to drop the pan to get to the
inside of the shift shaft in order to remove it and get to the seal. is this
what i have to do, or am i missing some secret to remove the shift lever?

Jason

If I remember, you'll need to drop the pan AND the valve body to remove the
shift shaft.

Sorry sad smiley Those seals seem to go out a lot. I'm losing one now. Tearing
into the trans is no fun at all.

This is why they all leak, mine included. Not a good design, but has
to REALLY leak to warrant the bother of a repair.

Guys,
Once you have it repaired and the leak stopped, make it a practice to keep
your hand off the shifter. I used to rest my hand on the shift handle, and
kept causing leaks like this on another car I owned, and a mechanic told me
that the reason was the tension caused just by the weight of my hand/arm.
He said this can also mess up manual shifting transmissions, too.

I've done this a couple of times. It's not as bad as it sounds. Just give
yourself some time and it's not a difficult process. The hardest part is
cleaning up the transmission fluid you spilled all over the garage floor.

Good point Paul! The wearing of a plastic bag over one's head might help
the situation! <g>
