I sent in my renewal the first offer I got, yet "Brandon Peskin: This
is the 4th time we've written with no word from you".

Ugh. Does anyone else have this problem with them?

I'd like to get their mags in a plastic bag. Mine always look like they've
been run over twice.

I didn't have that problem with them, but I did with MCA. Finally had to call them and ask what was up. The office staff was not very friendly at MCA. She acted like it was an imposition for me to call and ask about such a thing. Made me wonder if I should renew next time. Doesn't really do me any good other than to have a sticker on my windshield.

I don't subscribe to any of them anymore. The poorly written articles were of little/no help to me. Plus, once you've read five articles on how to change your door hinges, it's not worth repeating.

They'd pick great topics, but throw lots of money at the problem. That's not my style. In the end the result was often just an advertisement for the product they picked. Rarely (never?) did they pick at the product for real world usefulness or drivability/reliability. Rarely did they explain any "gotcha's" in the installation.

The tech sections were so incomplete and short that they had little value. When they say stuff like "Rebuild your engine in 10 easy steps" and the third step is something like "send your engine to xxx rebuilders and get it back", the article becomes worthless.

On the very few times they did the work themselves (and I'm not picking a specific early Mustang magazine, they're all basically the same), the article glossed over any important points for the sake of keeping it to only 3-5 pages.

Worthless.

I only subscribe to "Grassroots Motorsports" now. It's certainly not a Mustang magazine, but it's got guys who actually work on their cars and know what they're talking about. Plus it's not a big advertisement. I also enjoy "Winding Road", which is a free net magazine with fantastic pictures.

On this note, since I don't subscribe to them anymore, does any one have
that article from Mustang Monthly handy that talked about putting a Toyota
Steering box in an early Mustang? I think it was October or November of
last year, though it could have been December too. Anyway, they didn't
really do a good job of giving any details but I do recall seeing a mention
of "ABS Steering" as the company they contracted for it. I was hoping one
of you who might have the mag could dig up that number for me. I'm hoping
they have a pitman arm that I can use.:-).

I've seen a 66 with an infiniti v8.

On this note, since I don't subscribe to them anymore, does any one have that article from Mustang Monthly handy that talked about putting a Toyota Steering box in an early Mustang? I think it was October or November of last year, though it could have been December too. Anyway, they didn't really do a good job of giving any details but I do recall seeing a mention of "ABS Steering" as the company they contracted for it. I was hoping one of you who might have the mag could dig up that number for me. I'm hoping they have a pitman arm that I can use.:-).

I've seen an entire Celica front end under Mustang sheet metal! I know the guy doing it. Not sure if he ever finished.

I've been talking about the Toyota steering box swap for years. I'm not the originator, but I did spread the word for a while. I liked the idea a lot until it was discovered that the GM rack fit on the Mustangs without any kind of side load supporting device (and I've been in discussions talking about the GM rack since 1994!).

The Supra box is a great box, and it's a relatively easy swap from what it looks like, but the pitman arm would require some fangling to get to fit. I don't see this as a serious issue, but one not to be taken lightly since it's a life supporting device (steering that is).

The box is power, small, cheap, Toyota quality, and available. It need custom mounts, but it's an aft arm (arm behind the wheel) box and can support the long steering arm of the Mustang spindles with a good ratio. There is no other box I know of that's OEM that has these features, and it's not for lack of looking.

Yea, so have I, with you probably.:-). I did a Google search on my name a
while ago and discovered some of the archives on this subject. Don't recall
what year but I did meet a couple of guys who did the box swap.

From what I know, two of the three bolts just bolt up. The third is in
the rear where the original is in the front. On guy I met never put the
third in, the other used a spacer similar to the one on the alternator and
put in the third bolt through the inner fender. The pitman arm? Yea, that,
to me, is the key. Both guys I met had theirs cut and welded but I'm not
quite that bold. I looked around a bunch and never really found something
that could work off the shelf. I did talk to one machine shop about using
the Toyota arm to make some sort of copper spline and then using that to
bore through the '65 pitman arm since the Toyota hole is right between the
size of the '65 and '67. The answer I got was "sure I can do it, how many
do you want?" The setup costs would have been huge and a one off wouldn't
have made much financial sense. I did end up getting a drag link, idler arm
and tie rods from a Cressida that looked like they might work if I did the
appropriate amount of fanglage. In the end, kids and family caught up with
me and that's been pretty much shelved for now. I was hoping this ABS
Steering had mod'd the '65 pitman (that's what it looked like from the
picture) and would allow me to buy one. I figured that this might be the
kick in the butt I'd need to get back to it.:-).

Right. I've looked around a lot too. I love Pick-N-Pull for this. I
spend man hours of many days wading through cars and looking at steering
boxes.

Yeah, I think it was you, Pete! I forgot it was so long ago. You were also the one that helped me with my flywheel questions so long ago. Maybe you were the one that told me about it? Man, that was a long time ago. You're not done yet? (ha!)

Yeah, you were farther along on this and you were going to try it. I was "waiting" for you to go first ;-)

I've been brushing up on machining lately, with my benchtop mill. What was the problem with the Toyota pitman arm? Why couldn't we use the Toyota linkage and weld it to the Mustang linkage? Couldn't we re-taper the Toyota pitman arm to the Mustang center link?

If you tell me how (vaguely), I might be able to do it.

Yup, that's my problem too. My Stang is waiting for the intake on the new engine to be finished (Victor Jr. modded for EFI) with the fuel rails. I need some cheap fuel rail extrusion (seems impossible to get) or a good way to braze some thinner steel into a fuel rail. It's also waiting for a new paint job. Aghh!
>and that's been pretty much shelved for now. I was hoping this ABS Steering had mod'd the '65 pitman (that's what it looked like from the picture) and would allow me to buy one. I figured that this might be the kick in the butt I'd need to get back to it.:-).
I'd love to get this sorted out, although honestly the GM rack seems like a lighter weight and simpler way to go at the present. I had a friend market this with the guys at speed direct who are currently selling the kit and they said they'd sell any piece individually. The kit is fairly straight forward, but I'd probably make most of it myself. I could be swayed if someone tried the Toyota box and found it to be a good solution.
I've modified most everything else on the Mustang, and the steering is currently the weak link!

So, the splined end (the one that goes on the sector shaft of the
steering box) is different. On the '65, is 1" with different splines and
goes on just one way. The '67 is the same as the '65 but the sector shaft
is 1-1/8". The Toyota is metric and, from what I recall, a bit bigger than
the '65. The normal Toyota pitman arms have a ball joint on them while the
Mustang just has a hole as the drag link on the Mustang has the ball joint.

Why couldn't we use the Toyota linkage and weld it to the Mustang linkage?
> Couldn't we re-taper the Toyota pitman arm to the Mustang center link?

Possibly. I was thinking of using the Toyota box, pitman arm and drag
link. Then, I could have the holes for the tie rods reamed out. The guy at
Custom Alignment said he could do that. The Idler would likely have to be
Toyota as well.

So, I don't know what the process is called but from what I read, they
would melt copper into the splined end of the Toyota pitman arm. When that
cooled they would have a piece that they could run an electric charge
through that would basically burn its way through the '65 pitman arm putting
the Toyota spline in it. Then, I could bolt the box in, hook up my new
modified pitman arm and be off.

OK, so I would need to get a shaft and a rag joint to connect up to the
steering wheel. But, I do have a steering box that I pulled from a '60 Ford
that I planned on cuttingust for that purpose. According to all the people
I talked to, they would weld the rag joint bracket onto that shaft but they
wouldn't want to weld a pitman arm.

Yea, it always seems as if it's something seemingly small that hold sup
teh whole thing.

Wasn't that Sixto? If so, I showed him my steering box back when he was
talking about it. I drove up to his house.

Yea, I agree. Getting a nice small box with power steering would be
pretty cool.

And my recently sold '96 Toyota Tacoma P/U had 2000 Mustang rims, a
Mustang Shift knob and a Ford Motorsport front plate. The new GMC is
sporting that plate.:-). I'm thinking of getting a Ford hitch cover.
