Funny thing. I had a 72 (hmmm or was it a 71?) Mach I and mine had a
painted front bumper (rubber) instead of chrome. Now this was a couple
of decades ago so I could be wrong...

My '72 has a chrome front bumper too. I know most of the '73s I've seen have
painted ones.

My recollection is ..... plain jane 71 and 72 had chrome bumpers.
Mach Is and cars with exterior trim option got the plastic.

73 they all got plastic, extended, 5 MPH bumpers. I think...

according to "Mustang Encyclopedia" by Consumer Guide
..or somethin like that...

Whoa! Maybe it was a 73? Dark green Mach I with stripes, NASA hood,
351 2V, auto, tan interior. I wish I had never sold that one!
