Hey--

Anyone with a 65/66 289 running an AC WITHOUT a fan shroud? Does it
run too hot without the shroud?

Impossible here in the desert. Not only will it overheat most likely but the
A/C won't work to good either.

When I was growing up in So Cal, Mom and Dad's Mustang had dealer
installed AC. It never had a shroud.

I don't recall it ever over heating.

I think summer in Phoenix is a tad bit warmer than So Cal. I've needed the
A/C on at 6:00 am in August a few times. Maybe I should say "improbable" or
Ill advised over here. Particularly if your running r134a. Your old R12
system was much better at cooling and didn't inhibit the cooling system as
much. Anyway, why not run a shroud? It can only help.

The reason that I ask is that I wasn't sure if the shroud was causing
and intermittent buzzing/clicking from the front of the car. (My Ford
Shroud is hard to get exactly adjusted correctly--it doesn't want to
sit low enough to give the fan room at the bottom of the sweep to clear
the shroud. The cooler lines for the AT get in the way.)

I think my noise is from a bad fan clutch--that's why I took the shroud
off. FIgured it better to eliminate the possible problems before
ordering a $50 part. Thought it might be clipping the shroud at speed.
Nope. The noise is still there without the fan.

The fan doesn't want to spin freely when the car is off and, when it
does, it makes a clicking sound.

So, I figured that I'd ask if anyone ran an AC unit without the shroud
out of curiosity.

I think I may order one of those 3.5 inch plastic shrouds for my 66--it
is a daily driver and needs to stay cool in southern Louisiana. My
AC--134a--doesn't cool very well as it is anyway, but that is a
different tale. Still, the $80 price tag on the plastic shroud is a
bit steep. Ah, well. . . .

Ho Ho Ho!

I have the same problem on the shroud that came with my A/C for the 66 I'm
working on. Engine sits to low. I had to slot some holes and do a little
tweaking on the bottom edges to keep the fan from hitting. If you've got a
fan clutch it really won't freewheel spin unless it's totally worn out or
the ambient temp is really low. The warmer it gets, the more resistance to
spinning the fan will have when the clutch works right. I've seen worn
clutches that make funky clicks or squeals. Check for any axial play in the
hub. If you can wiggle the fan relative to the clutch mtg. flange at all,
I'd get a new one. Cheaper than a new radiator and whatever else if it comes
apart.

>From your diagnosis it sounds like you might have a water pump or alternator
bearing making noise though.

Get a shroud, the performance of your 134a system will improve a lot. You
may need to re check the charge in the system after you get a good flow of
air over the condenser.

When I bought my '66 C-code, all the A/C components
were there except the compressor and it had no fan
shroud. I don't know if a PO pulled it off for more
power or just couldn't afford to replace a worn-out
one or what, but I don't know if it was stock without
the fan shroud or if that had been pulled off too.
Everyone I talked to when I bought a new compessor
said to put a shroud on it. I know what you mean about
that metal shrouds not fitting right. I had to get out
the dremel and make the bolt slots longer, so it would
slide down farther and then had to bend the shroud
brackets some to keep it pulled more to the driver's
side, so the fan blades wouldn't rub. If I ever find
the time and energy I may buy another one, cut the
edges off of it and reweld new, properly placed bolt
slots down the sides. A plastic shroud and an electric
fan is probably a better solution though. Even with a
three-row radiator and the shroud, I still start to
overheat in stop and go traffic when the A/C is on - a
least in the summertime.
