Steve Hill's 1978 MG Midget 1500
|
I spotted an ad online, in which a fellow in Brooksville, FL was parting out a 1978 MG Midget. I was looking for a spare set of front-end components for my "Good Lil' Car", and took a motorcycle ride out to have a look.
Naturally, the bonnet (hood) and 3.72 differential pumpkin had already been sold... (Drat!)
The car was in pieces, but the sum of what was left had potential to be a complete car again. What impressed me most was that the basic body shell had much less rust than my "Good Lil' Car" (which really isn't that much, at all). The asking price for everything was not much more than I had budgeted for the front-end parts.
I returned with a trailer, and brought everything back to Orlando.
The previous owner had designs on performing a complete engine swap to one of the Japanese-based drive trains, and convert the car from rubber-bumper to chrome-bumper. In preparation for this surgery, the front nose section had been neatly severed with a SawzAll.
The front clip has been carefully reattached, engine compartment has been painted, and a stock running engine and transmission unit from a wrecked MG Midget has been installed.
My plan is to put the car back to its stock engine and upgrade the transmission to a Spitfire 4-speed with Overdrive and either a 3.9, 3.72, or a 3.55 differential, whichever I deem most appropriate.
Please see this thread, and add to the discussion about THAT subject:

I am now reinstalling the wiring harness, so I can start the engine and hear it run!
"LIFE! I will give it LIFE!!!"
