“Good Lil' Car”
I fully expect to be buried in this car, like Luke Fuchs (Jack Warden) in the movie "Used Cars".
HISTORY:
Originally purchased a Russet Brown 1979 Midget (with a roll bar) in 1985. Many thanks to Al Sneller for finding it for me!
Spun a bearing, rebuilt engine, sucked an exhaust valve, rebuilt engine.
Wrecked it! (Slick road, rear-ended a car at an intersection, bent the passenger side front frame) Stripped useable parts, scrapped frame.
Around 1987, I purchased a 1975 Midget (Tundra Green) rolling chassis with various body & engine parts included. This car was found in a scrap heap near a business; I spotted it while driving down the road. Unibody was relatively rust-free, all things considered. Traded transmission for a front right fender (white). Engine was dismantled, but present in car.
Merged all parts into a complete, running car, utilizing the stock 1979 drivetrain (3.7:1 differential!).
Removed Smog devices. (EGR valve, catalytic converter)
Upgraded ignition to an Allison optical pickup and controller box.
Added a Stewart-Warner mini gauge panel to steering column. (Oil pressure & voltmeter)
New Tires.
Added a luggage rack.
Replaced mechanical fuel pump. (Stock for `79 engine, using phenolic spacer)
Replaced rear suspension bushings and swapped the leaf springs. (Cured the "bachelor lean")
New front suspension bushings
Added visors.
New soft top
Acquired hard top (Thanks Chuck!)
PLANS:
Get the horn and emergency flashers working.
Fit SU HS-4 carbs, points-type distributor, header.
Try out a 3.55 differential
Body & paint. (Eventually...)
COMMENTS:
I really, really like driving this car. It's just too much fun!!!
