7'' wide rims should be okay wearing 235 tires, right?

I think that most would agree that 8" is perfect for 225s

Guess it depends how far off perfect you want to be! <G>

Will they "work"?? yeah....in that they'll fit the rim.

Are they optimal? No.

Was that a typo? 235 should be ok for 7.5"-8" wide
rims for the common tire sizes and sidewalls. I would
run a 225 on a 7" wide rim.

Okay I'll go with 225. It turns out that Tire Rack has a lot more tires to
choose from anyway, I guess that's further confirmation. Thanks everybody.

It also gets worse the bigger dia rim you have. Ie, what you might could
"get away" with on a 15/16 is going to really not work as good on a 17/18,
etc.

When the sidewall gets smaller, the closer the real world section width of
the tire to the rim width, the better.

FWIW I run 225/45/17 on my 17x8" track wheels. Works great. Real world
"width" of those WIDE V700's is 9+ in. Perfect for an 8" wheel

With a bit more sidewall, I also ran 225/50/16 on some 7.5" rims (same V700
tire) which also fit pretty well. They were a tick skinnier than the
225-17" tires

For a skinnier (usually) street tire, for the SHO on a nice 17x8" rim,
235/45/17 is probably the perfect size

I've run 235/45-17 on 7.5" rims with bad result in that the car "floated" too much in turns.

I've run 235/45-17 on 8" rims with significantly improved steering response.

IMO, and based on everything I've heard around here, 235/45-17 is not recommended for 7.5"rims. Though, it's not awful either, but surely it's not optimal if steering response is of importance to you.

I would go with at least an 8" rim.
