Has anyone ever seen a Mark VII with the 2.4 liter diesel engine?
I had never seen one until yesterday, it is an OHC slant 6 with a turbo.
Does anyone know the manufacturer of this engine?
I think it is of German origin.
Any experiences or opinions?

thanks,
Joe K.

I think the 2.4 liter is actually a BMW engine. It was used inthe 524td
for a couple of years. The performance was not that great as the engine
was rated around 115HP. I dont recall any performance numbers.

I haven't actually seen one, but I think I did read about it once.
Seems like it has a BMW (?) produced engine in it.

Simple, stay away from it. My dealer says it's a car that's very
hard to work on. (Since it's a bimmer engine, they have very little
knowledge of it) You would be better off to bring that car to a bimmer
dealer for engine service. As for performace, it's a real
disappointment. The unit simply does not have enough power to perform
the task. It's is simply undignify to see a Lincoln equip with a disel.

Have a nice day!

The engine is a BMW. Its the same engine found in the 524TD BMW. I
believe this was a factory option in '85 only. This engine is supoposed
to be bullet proof. I hear of 524TD owners getting 2-300K easily.

If sitting on the docks counts as "used". winking smiley BMW might even still have
some! But likely they got smart and shipped them elsewhere where diesel
fuel is heavily subsidized to help the industries that use diesel a lot.

It is a wonderful engine made by BMW. It drives like a gasoline engine.
Unfortunately it was an expensive engine and the 524TD didn't sell very
well. In '88 BMW still had something like 70% of the American spec. '86
models. No one wanted the diesel. Ford apparently did even worse. I
know of only one Lincoln sold in Santa Barbara and 3 524TDs. If you find
one, it will probably be a good reliable car. But I doubt your LM dealer
will have seen one, probably even your BMW dealer won't have. Drive it
and like me, you'll like the engine. It is nothing like the Mercedes
diesels that plod along like trucks.

Well, the 524 TD that cut me off must have lost its turbocharger, or
something, as it was just bellowing smoke everytime it took off. I don't
usually bitch about things, but this rich b*tch driving it insisted on
cutting in front of me several times during several miles of street
driving, and insisted on flooring it from the stop lights each time.
But I digress.

The smoke did not have anything to do with the turbo. Actually if she
really was flooring it, the black smoke surprises me. After test drives,
since we drove the cars a bit hard to check for misses and so on, the
cars usually did not belch out clouds of black smoke. But they sure as
hell did starting out on the test drive! And I never said it was a
screamer, merely that compared to something like a 528i, or a 318i, or a
Pinto, they do quite well. BTW. I'm not a diesel expert (we had one at
the shop that did the major repairs on the 3 BMW's and the lone Lincoln),
but I thought fuel quality plays a big part in exhaust soot content.
