For the FWD transmission folks:

My wife's tarus has had an erratic shift for about a month. We had
recently gotten the car from my parents. It has 100K miles
on it. WHen I backed it up a couple of days ago, I noticed a
trail of fluid. Inspection revealed it to probably be from
the tranny.

The local dealer looked at it. I trust them - they're a
reputable shop with low labor rates ($35/hour!). They called
me up and told me it would be about $650 just to fix the
leak, but they recommended against it because the fluid
appeared burned. Said a new tranny would be around $2k
installed and I'd be better off to buy another used Tarus
than sink the money into this one.

Opinions on what do do? I have enough vehicles to just sell
it, but it is my wifes primary transportation in winter and
does much better in the snow than the Econoline 150 van.

Thanks,
-Jim
