Nice to talk at you. I was in Panama City Beach on business one time and met
a really nice guy with a 350 IROC. It was a clean car. He had trashed the
transmission (auto) under warranty and found out that he could get it
fixed/replaced at somewhere besides the dealer, so he had a friend at a trans
shop and managed to get a fairly nice street/strip trans put in. That took
him to 14.4's and he had made some mods since then. His best e.t. was a
13.9, but he admitted that it was on a VERY cold day. (He was in the Air
Force and had been stationed in ALASKA at the time!)
We were at an 1.8 mile track (bummer) and I really boiled the tires off the
line. I ran a 9.62 and he ran a 9.44. I joked with him that it was a good
thing I didn;t run in to him on the street, because I usually considered the
older (pre 92) Camaros to be easy pickins.
Then we ran again and I hooked up and turned a 9.17, he ran a 9.34.
It was funny how the tables had turned. He was a good sport about it, as I
had been one when he had the better e.t.
The real moral of the story is that e.t.s are not set in stone. There are
too many factors that can change things. This is why I am have no qualms
with telling someone I beat a twin turbo supra or NSX or whatever. Sure,
maybe if a robot drove both cars to their absolute maximum peak
effectiveness, the other car would have beat me, but in the real world, it's
people driving the cars.
I would enjoy the race. The only ones I don't like are when you get caught,
or the other guy is an ***hole. You are basically racing YOURSELF, the other
car just adds excitement and a reference
point to the experience.
