I don't know who the original person who asked about this was, but I
sure hope he knows what he's doing. One can easily destroy an engine by
improper settings in the fuel/timing maps.

I wish it were. I don't think you can do this on a stock car and get
any significant increase in performance. Everything I read tells me
that computer mods should be done to accomodate other engine changes.
The most dramatic example was a project that Alex Borla did with a
Lamborghini Countach. He replaced the stock exhaust system with
something he custom built, and, in addition to saving almost 100 pounds
of dead weight, improved the breathing of the engine so much that it ran
too lean near the power peaks. But the car did have better torque
response at other speed ranges. So the owner had to have the computer
reprogrammed, which netted a 75 horsepower increase over stock. Now,
either Borla can claim that his exhaust modification allowed this
increase to occur, or the guy who reprogrammed the computer can
oversimplify and claim his reprogramming increase the engine's output
by 75 HP. The fact is, the second operation would have been unnecessary
and ineffective without the first. Too many car owners think that they
can install a simple "hop-up" device and expect their car to do wheel
stands, and too many chip makers make use of this fact in their marketing.
