Hi Ken,
It's a small world! I also had a Fairmont wagon that lost
its heater core. Instead of fixing it, I just by-passed it.
Buying the Fairmont was a bit of an accident. I wanted to get
a small car for my youngest daughter to learn to drive in. I needed a
car that's a bit smaller than our Crown Victorias (Berkeley has very
narrow, congested streets).
The Fairmont was a good buy, but when I looked under the hood,
I discovered that it had a 5.0 l V8 with a 2VV carburetor. Fortunately
it had no problem passing the smog test, and it was quite a little hot
rod. Even with the automatic tranny, it could spin its wheels if I
stepped too hard on the gas. This surprised many import car owners at
the various stoplight drag races.
Mileage in the Fairmont was much worse than in any of our Crown
Victorias. On the freeways, the best I ever got was 21 or 22 mpg. My
wife hated the car, so I sold it (and promptly replaced it with a police
cruiser from the auctions!).

Best regards,
George
