I'm going from a 2.73 to a 3.73 rear gear. What combination
do I need to run a speedo gear that won't break apart like the
23 tooth. I know the 3.55 can use a 20 tooth speedo gear with
a 7 tooth drive gear. What about a 3.73 rear end?

If we take 3.73 and divide it by 3.55 and multiply by 20, then round off,
you'll get 21. This is the speedo gear most appropriate to mate with a 7
tooth drive gear in a 3.73:1 application.
