Hi,

I am a new subscriber (not really, I have been listening/reading the
list for a couple of weeks now). Currently I own I ford product and
am driving another.

I have an 83 Mustang GLX 3-door with a sunroof, German 5 speed
transmition, 2.3L engine, ...

I am currently driving an Escort GL Wagon. Why do you ask? My clutch
pad wore out, and I have been trying to replace it. I dropped the
transmission, and was able to replace the clutch plate and pressure
plate, put the transmission back in, only to find that the clutch cable
slipped off of the little quadrant. When I looked at it, it appeared that
the cable had grown 2-3 inches. This can not be!! Is it possible for some
of the strands of the clutch cable break (when the clutch finally went, it
went with a "sprong" and no resistance on the clutch peddle). Is there
a spring attached to the quadrant?

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Hmmm. My clutch cable goes every 60K miles or so, and it always does this:

Clutch pedal gets noticeably lower as the cable stretches.

One day I put the clutch in and hear a "sprong" as you say, and then the
pedal goes to the floor because the steel clutch cable is broken inside its
plastic sheath. Doh!

If these were your only symptoms, your problem might be your cable,
not your clutch. If you look under the dash you'll notice the clutch
pedal has an arm on it, and the cable actually attaches more toward the
accelerator. I'll bet if you grab the cable and pull, you'll get about
2' of cable and a frayed end.

If it is the cable, replacing it is a pretty easy job.

Good luck,
Jim K
