I'm doing an engine + tranny swap from a wrecked 92 Mustang into an 88
Mustang convertible. Both engines are 2.3L, but the 92 has a cracked oil
pan from the wreck. The crack is at the very bottom and I don't think there
was any internal damage to the engine. The 92 oil pan appears to be cast
aluminum. It looks totally different from the 88 oil pan.
I'd rather not purchase a new oil pan from Ford ($$$) if I can get around
it... does anyone know where I might obtain a good used one? None of the
places I've checked with locally has just the oil pan - they want to sell
the whole engine.

Try some metal epoxy, like J.B Weld. It worked fine on my old Camaro,
that I accidentally knocked off the blocks with all the wheels off. I put
a small hole about a half inch from the drain plug.
make sure you let is cure for a couple days under a 100 watt spot light,
or something.
good luck.

Why not pull the steel pan from the '88 and put it on the '92 motor?

If a swap or the epoxy won't do, you can get it welded - I had some aluminum
welded a little while ago for $20.
