My '86 STOCK Mustang GT was in storage for one year. When I took it out and
drove it for the first time, The engine wouldn't idle below 1100 RPM and would
"hunt" once in a while. After about 20 minutes of idling in my driveway, it f
finally idled down to 750 RPM. What causes that? Do I have a bad TPS? Another
thing that I noticed was even though the brakes worked good, whenever I dep-
ressed the brake pedal, the engine would speed up by 300 RPM or so regardless of
idle speed. I thought that this was caused by a hole in the brake booster dia-
praghm??? any comments would be _VERY_ appreciated!
Thanxs,

Cory,
If you had your battery disconnected, the capicator for the EEC-IV probably
drained. You can duplicate this by disconnecting your battery for a half
an hour and then reconnecting it. When you start the engine, let it idle
for a few minutes. The rpm should oscillate until a steady idle is found.
If the idling problem persists, I would swap out the TPS. During the 1987
model year, Ford made a change to gold TPS electrical contacts to cure a
problem with corrosion. Apparently, as the sensor warms, the resistance
of the corrosion changes enough to send a false signal to the EEC-IV. My
'87 GT's idle was all over the map until I swapped out the TPS. A spot of
yellow paint on the TPS housing signifies it has gold contacts (at least it
did in 1987).
Cheers,
Dan Jones
