I recently had a problem with a bored out MAS. This unit
was bored to 60 mm from the factory 55 mm. When I opened
the package, the unit was very dirty and corroded. It looked
like it had been on a car in Alaska for many years without
ever cleaning under the hood. Anyway, the following mistake
cost me $75 and I would not want anyone to repeat my loss.
I took the MAS to work. I'm lucky in that I have access to a
full machine shop and a sand blasting box. I cleaned up the MAS
in the blast box and then blew out the passages and the threaded
areas with an air line. I proceeded to install the unit and it
worked fine for about a day and then the car started exhibiting
driving problems taching up to 2500 rpm on start-up and then
never dropping below 1200 rpm except when it would die. I called
place of purchase and they said send it back. Upon their "expert"
inspection they noticed that I had accidently roughened the area
where the hot wire sensors are located. The bare body was blasted
with the wire elements removed.... They say this "roughening" is
causing my drivability problems. I can't believe that the car ran
fine for over a day without any problems and then all of a sudden
the "roughening" causes problems!
The long and the short of it is I bought it. They are sending it
back to me and I will try to repolish the internal surfaces with
the Dremel this weekend. While I am at it I will grind out the
screen ridge and polish the rest of the internal surfaces. I will
post a note whether it works or not. Wish me luck!
