Lockup torque converter (used to be)

It appears that the converter on our MkVII LSC has ceased to lock up.
Highway RPM are much higher than usual (2000 vs 1500 at 70MPH) and
the car really drones. There is also an odd 'dink' sound, probably
a relay, when she steps on it from a 4th gear roll; the two are
at least coincident, if not correlated. I have no shop manual.

Is there a relay in the lockup control signal path?

How might it be identified?

Anybody know wiring color code for the lockup wire?

Any ideas about causes of failure to lock, other than the
(possible) relay failure, loose connectors?

Any explanations of the lock/unlock criteria and voltages?
