Well I took my 86 Mark VII with the knocking clattering sound to the dealer,
and the service writer "thinks" it might be power steering pump bearings (hey
nobody on the list guessed that one). Tomorrow a 'real' mechanic will give it
a listen, but I think the PS may be it (blew a hose a couple years ago and it
has been very noisey ever since).

Are Ford PS pumps rebuilt for a reasonable price these days? Last time I
checked on them they were about $300.

BTW the sound was being very polite at the dealer and I had to listen
carefully to point it out. It is sometimes much louder, and seems always
louder bouncing off a wall to the side.
