A couple days ago, I started my car up after having left it about 4 hours
earlier, during which it ran fine. The car seemed to run OK, except the
idle seemed a little high. Then, as I started to drive away, I heard/felt
a big "POOF" in the intake, and the throttle jammed open at where I had it
at the moment. The engine raced, and I shut it off because the throttle
couldn't be moved from the cockpit.
Checking under the hood, in the throttle body, I found a lot of black
deposits on either side of the plate, and sure enough, the plate would
not move with great ease. I suspected a big backfire, but caused by what?
(Maybe the crumby alcoholic gas that they're selling now?)
The sort of fortunate thing of this event was that I was visiting my
parents at the time, and they lived about 5 miles from BBK in Corona.
BBK was opened for another hour or so before they closed for Christmas,
so I rushed over there and bought a new TB and EGR spacer (the 70 MM),
and had the whole assembly replaced in about an hour. I had to tweak
the TP sensor with the voltmeter after getting home, but the car seemed
to run just fine. Now there is this small lip on the upper manifold
where it meets the slightly larger EGR plate, and it whistles a bit when
the engine is running.
I've now freed the plate in the old TB with lots of Gumout and WD40,
though it's still a bit sticky. I wonder what would have caused the
problem in the first place. I've had backfiring through the intake before,
but never this severe. I'm also worried about the next time this is going
to happen.
Oh yes, now that I have the 70 mm TB/EGR installed, I'm sort of wondering
about the matching manifold set from Edelbrock. The BBK TB/EGR set has
the words Edelbrock and BBK etched into one side, and they are matched
to the 70 mm openning to the Edelbrock intake set. Does anyone know
what kind of benefits I can expect over the stock manifolds? Would I
need to switch my computer from speed density to MAF? Of course, the
questions may be moot, as even now, when I go WOT from a standing start,
the rear tires already light up helplessly. Those funky suspension bits
I installed back there aren't helping a whole lot.
