352 to 390,428,

Having had a bunch to do with these I'd be inclined towards the 428, but
the 390 is much cheaper and can be made to go pretty good.
You really don't need a CJ (BEST!!!!) the addition of a cam, 750 Holley,
and headers will get you pretty close on an ordinary 428.
A 4bbl 390 and C6 could be found in good condition pretty cheaply,
with lots of potential for fixing up. The C6 is far superior to the FMX.
A 352 is working hard to haul all that weight although if originality is
your bag they also can be persuaded to go.( seen a galaxy do wheels up
every run with one of these and a guy here has his 58 Fairlane doing low
13's....)
Anyway Performance Fords is good but from my experience using a big oil
pump is overkill when a standard(iron body) pump will do.
Better exhaust manifolds(even 390 GT ones) unleash all sorts of power if
you don't want to hassle with headers.
I found that the factory intake made better midrange than the Edelbrock
Streetmaster so would not change on a mild motor despite the BIG weight
savings.Combined with the 750 Vacumn Holley this is a good combo.
I was getting 17 miles to the (imperial)gallon on highway.in a 67 Cougar
(428CJ, trick auto, big cam, headers, head work, mallory)
Cams hide lots of power if you want to change but some of the factory
parts are OK if you get them cheap enough. A good torque grind would be
very useful.
Cheers

I'm needing to rebuild the engine in my Galaxy. I've got a 64 Galaxy
with the 390 "Thunderbird" engine. Is the "Tbird" engine anything
special? It's got some nifty matching valve-covers and air cleaner.
I've also been lusting after a 428, but was thinking the tbird engine
should be retained.
