I don't have a VIN code book at my disposal and I would like to
identify how far back they used sequential numbers in the VIN codes.
Specifically a '64 with the last six numbers 100975 (ie. is it #975) and
an offhand guess at it's value. It's a A code 289 4bbl with a stock 4
speed and Rally Pack. Also what carburator should it have? No I don't
own it but I wish I did. Thank you to anyone who can shed light on this.

I'm not sure exactly when the seqential numbers start, but I would
imagine that the numbers include many pre-production cars that were
used to test the efficiency of the assembly line and likely were crushed
after they were used in testing engines, suspensions, and whatnot.

It was the 975th serial number assigned at that particular plant. I
believe a few numbers were not produced for whatever reasons. Also if a
number was assigned and the car could not be completed for a lack of
parts, the car was put to the side until parts were available to finish
it. So the car could concievably be the 1,000th Mustang out of that
plant, or it could be #970.

Also, production dates aren't really production dates. They are
scheduled completion dates. If the car was sidelined for lack of parts,
it may have waited a day or two after that date, or conversely may have
been moved up a day because of another car getting sidelined.
