Folks,

Ford type F transmission fluid seems to be disappearing from my
local
store shelves. I am in the process of installing a good C6 into my 73
Torino
wagon. The dipstick says to use " Type F " as do all but one of my
vehicles
equipped with automatics. Is the new Dexron/Mercon III acceptable as a
replacement. I have all the fluid drained from the transmission/converter
and
will switch if it is acceptable.

The guy at the local parts place said " Oh yea, This stuff can be
used
in all transmissions ". I believe that, Right! Any Transmission Guru's
out there?

Bill

Hey guys,

Now about all this Dextron/Mercon and/or FA (F) tranny fluid...
This brings up a very simple, but very frustrating question.
I've worked in a parts store for 1 year + and have never been able
to come up with a definitive answer to this question of the differences
between these two fluids. We usually go by the rule of thumb that if its a
pre 1982 Ford then it probably took type FA and everything else takes
Dextron. Of course we always add the little disclaimer, "but check your
owners manual!" I have, however run across a few odd cars (some Toyotas I
think up to 88 or so, etc.) that take FA. I've also called quite a few
tranny shops and gotten answers ranging from, "it doesn't matter" to "don't
even think about putting in the wrong one."
The shop who rebuilt my C6 in my 67 Cougar put Dextron in saying
that all newly rebuilt trannys (ie. all new seals and completely drained
and cleaned systems) take Dextron and that the only difference is that
Dextron is a supperior blend but it will not mix well with FA. So it
seems, from them atleast, that if your starting from scratch, even on an
older Ford tranny, you can put in Dextron as long as you keep only Dextron
in the unit, but that you shouldn't mix the two and shouldn't replace one
with the other unless it's following a complete rebuild, in which case you
should probably use Dextron because its more up to date.
Is this summary accurate at all? I'm certainly not claiming it is,
but it seems to be consistant with the info I hear. Can anyone solve this
once and for all?
Thanks.
