Hi All,
I've got an old 1977 Bronco in need of a bit of trans work. What I'd like
to do is improve the gas mileage of the vehicle without swapping the C-4
in it for a different type of transmission. I was wondering if any of you
know any tricks to improve a C-4's efficiency. Any suggeststions are
welcome. Also, where should I look for answers? Is it possible to put a
lock-up torque converter on this trans? That would be a nice improvement.
Thanks,
Paul Nowak

Funny you should ask.... In the " May 1991 issue of Super Ford
magazine there is an article entitled " Light-O-Matic " what it takes
to build up and trim down C4 transmissions. It starts on page 20 and
has lots of pictures. The author is "Earl Davis". If you cannot find
the magazine It might be possible to fax you a copy.

One of the mustang mags recently (maybe as early as August 1994) ran an
article about the C-4 trans. Lots of interesting info there.
As far as mods go, a complete rebuild with new seals, clutches/steels,
modulator, the larger servos, and a transpack/shift improver kit is about
as far as you can take the C-4. The B&M rebuild kit is about $200.00,
and the transpak is about $50.00.
As far as torque converters go, if you intend to be doing a lot of off
road stuff, and any kind of pulling, you had best stay away from lockup
type converters. The differences between the better non-lockups and the
lockups are minimal at road speeds, but the slop in the non-lockups just
might save your tranny (and the torque converter) under severe conditions...
