If there's a risk I won't stop in time, I will deliberately aim to the
side of the car in front of me (assuming there's room, of course). This
way if I really do fail to stop in time, I can slide off harmlessly to
the side of the road instead of rear-ending the poor guy in front.

<I wrote>

I have done this many times myself. Sometimes I pull (slide?)
to the side of the car in front of me if I can't stop in time or
if the person in back of me looks like they aren't paying
attention and can't stop either. It's saved my bacon many
times, too, from either rear-ending someone or being struck
from the rear.

Obligatory Ford remark:
I only do this when I'm driving a Ford and when I'm by myself
or with somebody.... <G>
