I just bought a '90 LX 5.0 Mustang a couple of months ago that I just started
to drag race, and I have a couple of questions.

1. Do these cars have some type of rev limiter? I keep missing third
gear when I powershift, and I'm concerned about over-revving the
motor. (My car already has a Hurst shifter, I think my problem is a
lack of driving experience)

2. What is the weakest link in '87-'93 Mustangs? In other words, if I keep
drag racing the car, what's probably going to be the first thing to break?
I don't use slicks with 5000 RPM launches. I currently have the stock
Gatorbacks and leave off idle, but I do powershift.

Thanks for any input. I would ask this question on the Mustang list but I
can't seem to get onto it.

1. Do these cars have some type of rev limiter?

Yes. The EEC-IV has what amounts to a built-in rev limiter around 6250
RPM. Whether it is a deliberate rev limit function or just running out
of CPU power at that speed is subject to debate.

2. What is the weakest link in '87-'93 Mustangs? In other words, if I keep

If you powershift, it's likely to be the transmission. T-5s are
notoriously marginal when used this way. I've heard the clutch is also
marginal for drag racing. I don't drag race, so I'll let the drag
racers on the list talk about the other likely failures and recommended
upgrades.

But given how hard you drive at the strip, I'd recommend installing a
scattershield, and soon. Nothing will end your drag racing career more
abruptly than clutch and flywheel shrapnel through your feet.

As the most recently visible anti-T5 bigot on this list, let me speculate you
will rip every tooth off the 3rd gear portion of your cluster gear
(countershaft) in a glorious yet depressing cacophony of metal music.

Enjoy.
