My 89 Escort ZX2 AND Mercury Tracer--esentially the same chassis have both had their fuel pumps jammed with dirt requiring replacdement in one so far have others had this problem and what was their fix?

The escorts both have the same chassis as a Mazda and some others, they just crimp different tin over it.
Both my Tracer and the ZX2 have had their fuel pump suddenly jamb, requiring a replacement on one--so far. needless to say they're a pain to access being in the tank under the rear seat (ah the joys of new(er) cars~~) I guess we're SUPPOSED to throw them away when they malfunction~~~!

In any case has anyone come up with a fix to prevent sand from somehow getting into the input area for the pump?
