Mustang Friends,

Since we live in a world where disappointment is a regular experience, I am happy
to report that one endeavor never fails to lift the spirit: the purchase of a new car ...

It has finally arrived! Just took delivery of my new 2001 SVT Mustang Cobra.
Oh my God - You would think it was the first time I ever saw a car! Quoting
the infamous Ferris Bueller "It is so choice!". Those that don't want to hear me
go on about my new toy, push the delete button now.

Permit me to share some joy (and lunacy) about my new Cobra:

The 3-stage laser red skin hugs tight metallic curves that stir the senses when
merely at rest. Even at rest, the meaty P245/45ZR BFG Comp T/A treads poised
on 5 spoke 17-by-8-inch polished alloy wheels, look ready to attack. Peering
between the spokes are the massive 13-inch Brembo calipers inscribed with one
word: Cobra. Other subtle queues announce it's presence: a coiled snake sits
on the fender, while it's name is impressed into the rear fascia between the
massive dual exhausts. Hidden below is the complex iron and aluminum sculpture
known as the Independent Rear Suspension. Yet, above all this lies the subtle
comfort of a snug cockpit, with the coiled snake emblazoned on the 2-toned
leather & suede seats. Settling into it's snug grip, you forget the mission mo-
mentarily. The 6-CD changer, calm tan surroundings, and new car smell relax
and inspire the senses. But from the black on white gauges to the bent shaft
shifter, the go fast mission for which it was created is advertised. A twist of
the wrist confirms it.

The throaty bellows of the modular V8 as it comes to life, announce it's presence
with authority. Just a curl of the right toe induces the growl. Under the hood,
the 4.6 litre modular V8 bares it's aluminum block and massive heads for all to see.
The heads are as wide as a Boss-nine, with those 32 valves crammed inside.
Few know what power lurks beneath those wide distributor-less valve covers, save
the two engineers whose names appear on the valve cover indicating they hand a
assembled and tested the beast. It's more than heavy-duty; it's hard core.

And oh does it go! 320bhp @6000 rpms, and a whopping 317 pound-feet of torque;
yet gotta love a machine that could shred a tire so easily. While true performance
limits will not be determined until after break in, if this is two-thirds of the potential,
look out Corvettes, Camaros, and Firebirds

After an abbreviated cruise from suburban Huntington to the Hamptons and Montauk
light house of my native Long Island surrounded by my fellow Long Island Mustang
Shelby Owners Club members, I discovered the road manners of this beast were
nothing short of impeccable. Cruising at 80mph, a worked 70 Mach I fore, and a 66
GT350 aft, the sun shining, tunes blaring and the road clear, I ask you, "does it get
any better than this?". I doubt it!

Thanks for indulging me, and for listening!

I don't see luck playing such a big part. It's probably more like "work
your ass off and get the car you want" kinda deal. Some just set the bar
a little higher than others. Nice ride - comes with a bragging rights
coupon in the glove box.

So, is that a new way of saying "congradulations"?

Unfortunately Dave, to afford the financing, some of us work day and night!
And, yes I have my share of disassembled undriveable projects. No sympathy
there ...

Permit me to share some joy (and lunacy) about my new Cobra:[...]

Here, here: the rewards of hard work.
But I hope it didn't seem I was bragging.
I was just so excited about this car, I wanted to tell
somebody who could appreciate what I was talking about.
You know?

Congratulations John. I know you worked hard for it and deserve the fruits of
your labor.

btw, I got a kick out of reading you initial email about your new toy. It
sounds like you are practicing for a new career as a magazine writer (humor
intended) smiling smiley

John,
Congratulations.=20
There is something about the new cars with the stock performance parts
available. I love my old Fords and drive them a lot. They are
just....less refined. Enjoy. And yes it can get a little better, on the
track or putting down the top.
Weather just got nice here, drove the Falcon in with the top down. Nice
spirited drive (287 rwhp). Saw 3 1970 blue Mustang fastbacks on the way
in!=20
Gotta enjoy it while can in Seattle.

If you can't share with us car fools, who can you
share with? Be proud of it, drive the wheels off
it. I love the new technology, just can't afford
it. And, if I COULD afford it, I'd be one of the
ones buying Cobra, big block EFI, etc parts and
sticking them in old Fords.

Yeah, I'm right there with you. That's what I love most about
the car hobby: the people I meet. I really feel I'm in my element.

Three times, a Ford Mustang has significantly altered the course of my life:

1) Working in a supermarket while in college, I made a pass at a girl
who's jealous boyfriend was within earshot (unbeknown to me). As
he approached me in the parking lot, he stopped for a moment and
admired my 68 Coupe, handed down from my original owner parents.
He said he could cut me a break, if I take him for a ride. We've been
friends since that day in 1980.

2) Working as a programmer for Lehman Brothers in 1990, the centerfold
fell out of the June '90 issue of "Fabulous Mustangs & Exotic Fords",
which I just picked up. The now defunct magazine (11/93 last issue)
regularly featured the drawings of Scott Teeters, who had drawn a group
of 65-70 Shelby Mustangs commemorating the cars and the Man. But
disappointed by my tiny new digs on the trading floor, I brightened
things
by taping the loose centerfold on the column bisecting my desk spot.
A guy walks by, stops introduces himself, and we begin chatting. Then
we go to lunch. Turns out he's a Sr. VP. 6 months later he hires me
into his team, and sells me his prized 70 Mach I. I embarked on a new
career path, that' s responsible for where I am today. And I got a car
out
of the deal!

3) I went to the 30th Anniversary of the Mustang in Charlotte, NC, parked
my SVO next to a woman from Georgia. She watched my car while I
registered, we chatted, and exchanged car stories at dinner. Today,
I'm happily married to her. And she pushed me to buy the Cobra!

Life with the Ford Mustang, has been pretty good!

John

The Jag is a lot of fun for a 4100 lb car with 370hp.=20
But it only has 11" brakes. The next year it got 12" and the Silverstone
got ? from Brembo. So I have some options. Lucky for me I found it used
in BC Canada with 5000 km on it. Ran it at the All Ford drags
13.78@102mph with 2 guys and the AC running! 35,000 miles now, needs
another set of 18" tires, and has been trouble free. Since Ford bought
them there have been great improvements in QA and the quality of the
parts being used, ie no Lucas.
I had to put new engines, etc in the convertibles so they could keep up.
Now in straight lines they should.
You planning on running the Cobra in the qtr or roundy?

Just slow around town. Maybe I'll do a Skip Barber course or open track at the next SAAC
at Lime Rock. The urge to chase a teenager in an Eclipse or Camaro/Bird will undoutably
get me in trouble. Now if I still had my 73 Pantera, then I'd be bound by tradition to thrash
the local law enforcement agents. The Cobra is an instant classic to me, and 20 years from
now, I'll ge wishing I didn't drive it hard. The cruise this past Sunday from suburbia to the
Hamptons was rather pleasant, 'though.

John
